An Elusive Love Story within a Magical Mystery

I enjoyed this book so much! The magical world the author created was so detailed that I quickly forgot that thieves' guilds, mages, and magical water windows weren't things that existed in everyday life. The protagonist, Eleanor, is a very relatable character, which really draws you into this story and hypes up the tension at every turn. Cassandra is a dynamic mystery from her introduction, and it's no wonder that these two have so much chemistry. The story itself unravels so many secrets, and each one is just as intriguing as the next.
The magical drug war that this story centers around is also complicated and rich with history. Every time you seem to get an answer in this book, you end up with more questions. There's a lot of tension, and it doesn't let up until the end. Murder, kidnapping, betrayal, love, quick wits, high stakes – what more could you want from a book? Five stars from me!

Well-written book with an entertaining story and likable characters

Set in a world with three moons, it's about recently graduated mage Eleanor Reed, whose first mission appointed by the King’s Council is about to begin. It consists in infiltrating the Nightshade Brotherhood, the city's thieves' guild, along with an also recently graduated soldier so they can obtain proof of the guild's part in the distribution of a dangerous hallucinogenic drug.
While her partner, Ben, is tasked with posing as a thief, her role consists primarily of communicating with the Council through her magic when necessary, while hiding her powers from the thieves. However, during Ben's first assignment, she's discovered using magic by a mysterious woman, Cassandra, later revealed to be a member of the Brotherhood. In exchange for not telling anyone (which would result in their expulsion from the guild), Cassandra asks for Eleanor's help in a new mission, and so it begins!
What I really liked:
> I liked the 'feel' of the world, I could easily picture myself walking down the streets with them.
> The plot, although pretty simple (basically an undercover mission to get evidence of the Brotherhood's guiltiness) and predictable (with a few questions left in the air, or maybe conveniently overlooked), I found it very entertaining.
> The characters! Even secondary ones. I loved Cassandra. Something that annoys me when we're presented with "villains", or "bad people", is that sometimes in the end it turns out that they were only 'misunderstood', which I don't think happens here. Sure, they might not be as bad as their reputations, but they are criminals and it's not something they feel sorry about. I don't think there were any "black" or "white" characters, but a mix of both, or more like grey.
> I also liked the relationships between the characters, especially, of course, that between Eleanor and Cassandra, which I enjoyed seeing it develop. There is some romance, and it's an important aspect of their dynamic, but you do have to be patient, haha.
Now, now... the ending. I won't spoil anything, but it was really rushed and felt kind of incomplete. 80% into the book I found myself worried (looking almost frantically at the bottom right corner of the screen of my Kindle) there would not be enough time to end the story properly, and there wasn't, in my opinion. I just wish there would have been a few more pages. :
