The growing acceptance of building information modeling (BIM) is an acknowledgment that the building industry has fundamentally changed. The information contained in a BIM can be used for other purposes such as predicting energy consumption, cost, scheduling, clashes between systems, and can even be leveraged for facilities management uses. Entire suites of software theoretically can hook into the virtual building description for specialized uses.

This book addresses many key roles that BIM is playing in shaping professional offices and project delivery processes. It is a professional design guide for architects, engineers, and contractors (and students!) concerning the principles and specific applications of BIM. Those wishing to understand how to make the transition from CAD to BIM will benefit as well those looking to push the boundaries of digital technologies. The book is divided into two parts: Fundamentals and Application.

Fundamentals defines terms, explores issues, and predicts future opportunities that BIM offers. Many key ideas are introduced including parametrics, the roles of BIM for different stakeholders, the single model versus federated models, the BIM Execution Plan, and what is on the computing horizon. It is subdivided into five chapters: BIM Overview, Stakeholders and BIM's Many Roles, Data Exchange and Interoperability, BIM Implementation, and Beyond Basic BIM.

Application: project case studies, focuses on specific examples of how BIM is actually being implemented and successfully integrated into four offices. These firms provide vignettes on specific buildings that show successes and missed opportunities and give advice to other professionals. About the Author

Karen Kensek teaches at the University of Southern California, School of Architecture. For over 25 years, her teaching and research have concentrated on the evolving role of digital design and its applications to the building profession. Her current research focuses on BIM analytics. She has organized seven building information modeling symposia at USC (2007–2013) with themes on education; sustainable design; construction and fabrication; analytical modeling and evidenced-based design; BIM management, implementation, coordination, and evaluation; and the future of BIM. Under her leadership, the School received the Autodesk Revit BIM Experience Award in 2008 and a BIM award�from the AIA Technology in Architectural Practice knowledge community in 2010. She is a past president of the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA).

Outstanding book

I bought the print version of this book. The contents are excellent. Most of the book provides a deep overview of BIM, the stakeholders and implementation. Chapter 5 is the best chapter, covering issues "Beyond Basic BIM." The last part of the book has four "project Case Studies" from different firms. Lots of great graphics and description. This book goes way beyond "overview." I have several BIM books that I like (such as the Eastman handbook). This one ranks right up there with the best.

The book is very comprehensive and tells the truth in today’s complex world of advanced computer modeling. The book covers just about every aspect of computer modeling as well as all the major software and delivery methods. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to further their education on the subject of Building Information Modeling.

Great quick read on the state of BIM

I got the book at the USC BIM Conference August 22, 2014 and read it over the weekend. It is an excellent, clear treatment of the current state of BIM and should be required reading for every Architecture student and every practicing architect.

A Book Lover's Delight

Book lovers are introduced to the subject in an enticing way as Lewis' boyhood environment is described in the opening section:
"The house was full of books--I had always the same certainty of finding a book that was new to me as a man who walks into a field has of finding a new blade of grass--through all of these were the works of novelists, historians, essayists and biographers."
On researching their subject, the authors confess in the preface: "This colossal monument of paper contains many hundreds of letters from C. S. Lewis to his father, his brother, his close friend Arthur Greeves, and a few other family connections; it also includes dairies, sometimes kept with great minuteness, covering many years." So the challenge of condensing this data into book form was formidable. What adds to it is Lewis' quest for knowledge. He read widely and wrote prolifically. The result of this aim at telling the story of a masterful mind is successful, however. We know the essence of the man after having read this inspiring look at his life.

Very good, but not the best

This is a very good biography on C. S. Lewis by two men who knew him personally. They present an even-handed coverage of Lewis's life, weaving in discussion of Lewis's many writings. The biography is entertaining, even funny at times (how could a biography on Lewis not be humorous?!), but I'm afraid some of the humor is so British, that it will be lost on most American readers. A better biography, in my opinion, is Jack by George Sayer (who also knew Lewis). But this was probably the first important biography of Lewis to be written, and is very good in its own right. I'd recommend it for Lewis fans who want to read multiple biographies. But if you just want to read one, get George Sayer's.

A decent anthology

With so many anthologies available that are intended to be used in applied ethics courses, choosing the best one for one's class can be overwhelming. About all a reviewer can do to help is to list some of the plusses and minuses of the anthology in question.

Here are some of the reasons to use this book in an applied ethics course:

There are plenty of articles, around 80 in all. For each issue covered there are four or more articles (more typically six or so) representing divergent viewpoints. (The anthology does not show any obvious bias in its selection of articles.)

Each section is preceded by a fairly extensive introduction to the topic written by Sterba. These introductions, which set out the issue clearly and briefly examine the alternatives, provide helpful background to the student.

So, why not an unqualified recommendation? One thing is the choice of topics. While Sterba covers many of the standard issues, such as abortion and euthanasia, affirmative action, and free speech, there is a relative lack of material in the area of bioethics and environmental ethics. For instructors wishing to cover these topics in their course, it is probably best to look for a different anthology.

The other negative is the price. This is definitely a high-end text when it comes to cost. It retails new at nearly $150 dollars. There are other anthologies on the market that are just as good and considerably more reasonable.

Too Much but Not Enough for the Price

A useful if somewhat overwhelmingly comprehensive introductory ethics text. Strong points include a strong focus on libertarianism, useful in the current political climate and inclusion of computer ethics, gay and lesbian rights, and a focus on our global responsibility. The text attempts to include relevant documents such as court decisions, but these seem unhelpful and I probably won't have students read them. The editor also includes a few too many of his own writings which are not by far the strongest entries in the book. Useful as a supplemental text to springboard discussion of current ethical issues, but I wouldn't recommend it for the primary or only text for an introductory undergraduate class.

A Complete, Accurate and Concise Commentary

I have enjoyed this three volume set. You cannot take this book and read it like a novel. The subject requires much study and research even though the book provides the scripture.
He does a great job handling Genesis chapter 6. This very difficult chapter is put forth quite well by Moses! Most authors and especially expositors read right over the words in an effort to avoid the contoversy. Feature this: we read how God created the Heavens and the Earth with one word yet have a hard time with chapter six. The controversy is put forth by those that WILL NOT believe what the Bible says. Brother Boice handles the topic just as God breathed it to a cloud of Biblical writers!
The genealogy sections of Genesis are given meaning and are not boring. He does an excellent job of integrating the people and the stories into the New Testement. I cannot imagine having a serious study of Genesis and NOT reading this book! But be ready, it took me three months to finish the first 11 chapters! This set shall remain one of my most valued references in my library.

fine commentaries but in need of supplemental resources

Boice was the model of scholarly pastor -- BA Harvard; MDiv. Princeton Seminary; PhD Basel Switzerland. He spent his entire ministry at one church (30 years at 10th Presbyterian), in the city he loved and grew it to thousands.

I have used his commentaries now in Ephesians, Acts, Genesis, and John, and in my opinion his NT work tends to be less moralistic and more Christ-Centered than his OT work.

Nevertheless, his exegesis is always thorough, readable, theologically solid. And the hardcover edition by Baker is packaged nicely. This set is definitely worth having, but you will want to supplement it with something like Allen Ross (more technical), Iain Duguid (more focused on covenant theology), and Waltke (more theologically rich).

I basically agree, but ...

Generally Boice is a very helpful writer, and I thought his book "Standing on the Rock" is an excellent defence of Biblical inerrancy.
[...] he's disappointing on a literal Genesis, [...] I think it's serious enough to deduct two stars. NOT because it's wrong (although it is), but because of his REASONS for rejecting a straightforward exegesis.
On Vol. 1 p. 57-62, he writes:
`We have to admit here [concerning those who take the six days of Creation as literal days] that the exegetical basis [the arguments from the words of Scripture] of the creationists is strong. ... In spite of the careful biblical and scientific research that has accumulated in support of the creationists' view, there are problems that make the theory wrong to most (including many evangelical) scientists. ... Data from various disciplines point to a very old earth and even older universe.'
I.e. unlike everywhere else in the Bible, where he insists on the primacy of Scripture, here he is admitting that he is, in effect, adopting the primacy of 'science' (really the uniformitarian *interpretation* of data) and reinterpreting Scripture to fit.

About the Author
John Graham is the D. Richard Mead Professor of Finance at Duke University where he also serves as the Director of the CFO Global Business Outlook survey. He is coeditor of the Journal of Finance. Professor Graham is also a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, Vice President of the Western Finance Association, and been recognised for outstanding teaching and faculty contributions at Duke and the University of Utah.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. Best book on Caribbean bivalves!

This is the most comprehensive treatment of bivalve mollusks from the Western Atlantic. It is the result of a detailed inventory of the molluscan fauna of the Florida Keys. Since most species also occur elsewhere in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, with many species ranging in distribution from North Carolina (some even further north) to Brazil, it is a must-have reference for anyone interested in Western Atlantic bivalves.

The book uses an updated classification, which differs quite a bit from the more traditional classification used in older literature. It is based on recent phylogenetic analyses, including molecular data, which revealed relationships among groups of bivalves that previously were thought not to be related. For example, the family Tridacnidae, the giant clams of the Indo-Pacific, are closely-related to the Cardiidae (heart cockles), so it is now classified as the subfamily Tridacninae in the Cardiidae. The classification follows that of Bouchet and Rocroi (2010), Nomenclator of Bivalve Families. Malacologia 52(2): 1-184. The coauthor of the Seashells of Southern Florida, Rüdiger Bieler, is one of the authors of the classification of bivalve families within the Nomenclator.

The book is very well organized and easy to use. Each family has an in-depth introduction, with a featured species, then details on the features of the shell, anatomy (with a useful colorful diagram of the general anatomy of the family), ecology, biodiversity, distribution and classification, followed by key references for the family, and superb color photographs of all species reported from the Florida Keys. For each species there is a detailed description of the shell, information on its habitat, comparison with similar species, and abundance.

At the end of the volume, there is an illustrated glossary of bivalve terms, with not only an illustration but arrows to point to the exact structure being discussed. There is also a detailed list of image credits and information on every image and collection data for shells illustrated in the book.

In summary, I highly recommend this book to scientists and amateurs alike. I look forward to the publication of other volume(s) on the gastropods and other mollusks of the Florida Keys.
