This latest volume in the second edition of Rock-Forming Minerals deals mainly with the amphiboles, but sections have been added on deerite, howieite and multiple-chain silicates (biopyriboles). In the years since the first edition, the quantity and scope of research on amphiboles and relate minerals has grown enormously and has given rise to a wide variety of literature. This book, which has been completely re-written and greatly expanded, summarizes the important research results and presents them in an organized fashion. Each chapter is headed by a brief tabulation of mineral data and a sketch showing optical orientation, and concludes with full references to the literature. Diagrams of the crystal structures are presented and followed by discussion of the structural features, making use of data from spectroscopic as well as diffraction experiments. The chemical sections include over 550 analyses from which structural formulae have been calculated, illustrating the range of chemical and paragenetic variation exhibited by each mineral; also the results of P-T experiments, thermochemical and computer modelling techniques. The sections on optical and physical properties include much information gained by electron microscopy and also by deformation studies. The principal modes of occurrence are described in the paragenesis sections emphasizing correlations with chemistry. Rock-Forming Minerals is a standard reference work for professionals in mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry, as well as having a wide appeal as a referencework for postgraduate research students and research workers in related fields.

Amazon.com Review
"Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. The images of this tale continue to resonate in our minds: 16-year-old Nancy Clutter teaching a friend how to bake a cherry pie, Dick Hickock's black '49 Chevrolet sedan, Perry Smith's Gibson guitar and his dreams of gold in a tropical paradise--the blood on the walls and the final "thud-snap" of the rope-broken necks.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In the wake of the award-winning film Capote, interest in the author's 1965 true crime masterpiece has spiked. Capote's spellbinding narrative plumbs the psychological and emotional depths of a senseless quadruple murder in America's heartland. In the audio version, narrator Brick keeps up with the master storyteller every step of the way. In fact, Brick's surefooted performance is nothing short of stunning. He settles comfortably into every character on this huge stage—male and female, lawman and murderer, teen and spinster—and moves fluidly between them, generating the feel of a full-cast production. He assigns varying degrees of drawl to the citizens of Finney County, Kans., where the crimes take place, and supplements with an arsenal of tension-building cadences, hard and soft tones, regional and foreign accents, and subtle inflections, even embedding a quiver of grief in the voice of one character. This facile audio actor delivers an award-worthy performance, well-suited for a tale of such power that moves not only around the country but around the territory of the human psyche and heart. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood:" after 45 years, still the best "true crime" book I've ever read.
By Mike Powers
Early in the morning of Sunday, November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, two men committed a horrific crime that gained national attention. They slaughtered four members of the Clutter family – Herb, a prosperous and well-respected farmer, his wife Bonnie, and their two teenage children, Nancy and Kenyon. The killers had slain all four Clutters with a shotgun; they had also slit Herb Clutter’s throat.

The day after the slayings, the “New York Times” printed a news article that brought the crime to national attention. Author Truman Capote read the article and decided to write a serialized account of it for the “New Yorker” magazine. That series of articles became the basis of Capote’s now famous book “In Cold Blood,” which tells the story of how two ex-convicts, acting on a tip from a fellow criminal, traveled 400 miles across Kansas in order to rob the Clutters of a rumored large sum of cash. It became a huge best-seller and spawned what Capote claimed was an entirely new genre letters: the “non-fiction novel.”

I first read “In Cold Blood” in 1971. It was required reading for a Modern American Literature college course I was then taking. At the time, I remember being very impressed with it. I thought it was a very disturbing story that was also extremely well told. I found myself held spellbound by Capote’s tale of these two men who journeyed through Kansas intending to commit a senseless, barbaric crime.

Last month, I read “In Cold Blood” for only the second time in the past 45 years. I must admit, I had forgotten just how good this book is. Although the crime is now nearly six decades past, it has lost none of its impact because of Truman Capote’s writing. The entire scene – the wheat fields of Kansas, the close-knit small town of Holcomb, the home in which the Clutters lived and died – is brought alive through Capote’s masterful prose. The same is true for the dreary and depraved worlds through which Hickock and Smith traveled as they sought to escape justice.

In recent years, new information has come to light, which has caused some people to question the accuracy and authenticity of “In Cold Blood.” Much of the criticism has to do with Capote’s “fictionalizing” many scenes in the book. It’s important to remember that Capote was always clear in claiming that “In Cold Blood” was a non-fiction novel, in which he used fictional situations to tell a true story.

I have a long and abiding interest in true crime books. That interest was “kick-started” in the spring of my sophomore year in college, when I first read “In Cold Blood.” To this day, it remains the very best true crime book I’ve ever read. Most highly recommended

but it just made each part drag on and seem like there was never going to be an end
By R. Whitt
In Cold Blood is definitely a well written book and I had been wanting to read it for a year or so, but I don’t think I realized how slowly the plot was going to go. Capote added a lot of details which makes sense because it is necessary to know as much as you can about the family and murderers, but it just made each part drag on and seem like there was never going to be an end. Having all of the details was helpful, but not always necessary, like reading about Nancy’s boy troubles, or moving around her schedule to help a girl learn to bake a pie. The details about how different Dick and Perry, the murderers, were different was beneficial because it helped you try to understand their motive for the acts that they committed. I think that Capote not coming in as someone who interviewed people and maintaining his position as a narrator did not help the over-detailing issue. Overall, I think it is a very well written book for it to be one of the first books of its kind, but I do believe that in some places it is too detailed and just drags on for many pages before it gets back to the point.

In Cold Blood - an account of a murder heinous in scope by any standard.
By John J. Petry
Everyone knows this book. It was the first of a genre and according to many made Truman Capote a household name but also destroyed him. I cannot comment on either of those issues since I never knew Mr Capote personally and while I was around when the book was written and published I was too young to know about his celebrity at the time. But the book is well written and opens a door into a time period very different from the one we live in today. The book conveys the time period to us and the character of these men and to a certain extent their victims. It shows the essential humanity of criminals involved here. One can only winder if perhaps things had been slightly different in terms of their lives, they might have never embarked on their lives of criminality. Not to mention one can ponder the context of the crime and had the quirks in these two men's characters had been slightly different the horrendous events which occurred that night may well not have occurred. The enormous waste of the life both of the victims but also two men who could have been quite different than the cold bloodied criminals they became.

I have always been opposed to the death penalty for the simple reason I believe it is immoral but I can see how the participants here were condemned by the jury and how no one felt the slightest unease in hanging them. Having been an attorney for over 30 years I am also horrified by the depictions of the trial and the actions taken by the judge, district attorney and defense attorneys here in the conduct of the trial. While there is little doubt as to their guilt, they did not receive a fair trial which our Constitution provides to all even the most heinous of criminals. That justice as well was a victim of this crime is horrendous.

This book is not dated and well worth the read.

The Haves and the Have-Nots: A Brief and Idiosyncratic History of Global Inequality, by Branko Milanovic

Who is the richest person in the world, ever? Does where you were born affect how much money you’ll earn over a lifetime? How would we know? Why—beyond the idle curiosity—do these questions even matter? In The Haves and the Have-Nots, Branko Milanovic, one of the world’s leading experts on wealth, poverty, and the gap that separates them, explains these and other mysteries of how wealth is unevenly spread throughout our world, now and through time.Milanovic uses history, literature and stories straight out of today’s newspapers, to discuss one of the major divisions in our social lives: between the haves and the have-nots. He reveals just how rich Elizabeth Bennet’s suitor Mr. Darcy really was; how much Anna Karenina gained by falling in love; how wealthy ancient Romans compare to today’s super-rich; where in Kenyan income distribution was Obama’s grandfather; how we should think about Marxism in a modern world; and how location where one is born determines his wealth. He goes beyond mere entertainment to explain why inequality matters, how it damages our economics prospects, and how it can threaten the foundations of the social order that we take for granted. Bold, engaging, and illuminating, The Haves and the Have-Nots teaches us not only how to think about inequality, but why we should.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Milanovic defies the typical image of an economist by presenting research overlaid with humor, literary insights, and fully imagined portraits of daily life as he examines inequality across time and continents. He weighs the wealth divide between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice as well as Anna Karenina’s financial prospects had she married Vronsky. He ponders John Rawls, Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, Max Weber, and others to explore theories regarding the rich and the poor. Using complicated economic models that he explains very well, Milanovic breaks down incomes to make comparisons between the haves and the have-nots within nations, between nations, and among citizens of the world. He offers vignettes that make his concepts all the more accessible and entertaining as he explains the errors of Marxism and why a person’s relative wealth is determined more by their country of origin than by their family’s wealth. Milanovic writes as much like a philosopher as an economist as he ponders the growing trend of inequality in income around the world and answers questions many readers likely ask themselves about their economic prospects. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"if you have the slightest interest in politics and macro-economics, you should be (in possession of the book). When Milanovic gets serious, he becomes indispensable." (Spectator) "Branko Milanovic...had a triumphantly simple idea for a popular book which will surely also become a staple of social science department reading lists..." (Times Literary Supplement)"

Engaging and clear
By Ecologist
I'm not an economist, but I am curious about the alarming increase in inequality. I cannot vouch for its accuracy or whether it reflects accepted or well supported ideas by economists or other social scientists. That said, it was incredibly clear, engaging, and in rich in detail and ideas. A great read and very thought provoking. It's logic and theses are compelling and the data it provides here and there are quite absorbing. It considers the history, competing ideas, causes and consequences.

I'm not sold on the vignette approach - though it did help in navigating complex ideas. I was also disappointed that the role of natural capital and environmental sustainability did not figure in discussions of poverty and inequality. I also found the end, or the final vignette about the first and third worlds, not really a great close to an engaging read.

I totally recommend this book, however. Easily the best on the topic I have read. Beautifully written, and I feel I have learned more about this important topic than I have with any other book or media.

Dispelling Myths
By Amazon Customer
Professor Milanovic begins this book by explaining, "The objective of the stories around which this book is organized is to show, in an unusual and entertaining way, how inequality of income and wealth is present in many facets of our daily lives, in the stories we read or the discussions we have around our kitchen tables or in our schools or offices, and how inequality appears when we look at certain well-known phenomena from a different angle...The book is organized around three types of inequalities. In the first part, I deal with inequality among individuals within a single community - typically a nation...In the second part, I deal with inequality in income among countries or nations - which is also intuitively close to most of us because it is the sort of thing we notice when we travel, or when we watch the international news...In the third part, I move to the topic whose relevance and importance are of a much more recent vintage: global inequality, or inequality among all citizens of the world."

Professor Milanovic accomplishes this task by introducing the reader to several tools that professional economists use to describe and quantify inequality; "Kuznets' Hypothesis," the "Gini coefficient," and "Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) dollars," to name a few. The book is, on the whole, very engaging and easy to grasp. Each of the three chapters begins with an essay which is followed by several vignettes, or short stories, that give concrete examples of ideas outlined in the essay. There are more than a few spots in this book where Milanovic does a great job of dispelling some widely held myths. For example, "A lesson from the collapse of the communist federations is that an important part of the reason for the breakup lies in the inability of communist authorities - despite their successful policy to contain and reduce interpersonal inequality - to reduce huge, historically inherited income differences among the constituent members." Which bears a remarkable resemblance to today's China; "The single most serious threat to Chinese unity is increasing inequality."

In closing, I really enjoyed this book, both from a historical and an economic angle. It may deserve five stars, but I gave it only four because I disagreed with Professor Milanovic's stance on immigration; I tend to agree with the view that John Rawls advocates ("Increasing obstacles to migration raised by rich countries would be, one is led to believe, viewed as fully justified by Rawls."), whereas Milanovic states that, "Whether it is under the pressure of domestic labor or out of fear of cultural heterogeneity, the rich world has begun a process of walling itself in, creating de facto gated communities at the world level." I garnered my view having read The Central Liberal Truth: How Politics Can Change a Culture and Save It from Itself and Culture Matters: How Values Shape Human Progress. Regardless however, I believe there will probably be no major change from this perspective, because as Professor Milanovic rightly points out, "Inequality studies are not particularly appreciated by the rich."

A great introduction to inequality
By G.X. Larson
This short book (about 220 pages) by World Bank economist Branko Milanovic is a great introduction to global economic inequality. The book is made up of three parts: inequality inside of nations, inequality among nations, and inequality among the people of the world. Each of the three sections is introduced with an "essay" that discusses the main ideas and introduces relevant economic tools (such as the Kuznets hypothesis and the Gini coefficient). After each essay Milanivic presents shorter (about six or seven pages each) "vignettes" to help convey the ideas discussed in the preceding essay. For example, one vignette used to convey inequality inside of nations discusses characters' incomes in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". Another vignette discusses inequality in the Roman Empire. The vignettes are not all trivial bits of information, though. In fact, most of the book is a serious exposition of inequality; this book is no mere "Freakonomics" for inequality. Some more serious vignettes are concerned with globalization, economic mobility, and redistribution. In short, this book contains a wealth of information.

No Compatiblilty for Newer Technology
By danella212
I bought this as an ebook for a class I was taking at college which was great. Then I had to buy a new computer and of course the only option to purchase a computer is either going to be Windows 8 or an Apple. This ebook is not compatible with Windows 8, iPhone, or my tablet. The only way I could access this book again was to download an older Kindle version (Kindle for PC) on my Windows 8 computer, which luckily worked.

Beware if you plan on purchasing this as an ebook, because you may not be able to access it ever again in the future when the technology is still not updated. I'm thinking I may invest in printing this ebook sometime just in case.

Palm Beach, Florida

"You do look like me." Princess Emmeline d'Arcy's voice was hushed as she slowly circled Hannah, her arched eyebrows pulling over deep blue eyes. "Same face, same height, same age…if our hair color was the same…we could pass for twins. Incredible."

"Not exactly twins. You're half my size, Your Highness," Hannah said, suddenly self-conscious next to the very slim Princess Emmeline. "Itty-bitty, as we say in America."

Princess Emmeline didn't appear to hear her, too busy examining Hannah from head to toe. "Do you color your hair? Or is that natural? Either way, it's gorgeous—such a rich, warm shade of brown."

"It's from a box. It's several shades darker than my natural color, and I do it myself," Hannah stammered.

"Can you buy your color here in Palm Beach?"

Hannah couldn't believe that the stunning golden-blond princess would be interested in her shade of brown hair dye. "I'm sure you can—it's sold everywhere."

"I meant, could you buy it for me?"

Hannah hesitated. "I could. But why would you want it, Your Highness? You're stunning, so beautiful as you are."

Princess Emmeline's full lips curved and yet her expression looked bleak. "I thought maybe for a day I could be you."

"What?"

The princess walked away from Hannah, moving to stand at one of the tall windows of her lavish hotel suite where she gazed out over the hotel's elegant, tropical Florida garden.

"I've made a terrible mess of things," Princess Emmeline said softly, hands lifting to press against the glass as if she were a captive instead of the world's most celebrated young royal. "But I can't even leave here to sort things out. I'm followed wherever I go—and it's not just the paparazzi—but my bodyguards, my secretary, my ladies-in-waiting." Her slim shoulders shifted and her fingers curled until her hands were fists against the glass. "For just one day I want to be normal. Ordinary. Maybe then I could take care of something, make this nightmare I'm in go away."

The anguish in Emmeline's voice made Hannah's chest squeeze tight. "What's happened, Your Highness?"

Princess Emmeline gave her head the slightest shake. "I can't talk about it," she said, her voice breaking. "But it's bad… It'll ruin everything…"

"Ruin what, Your Highness? You can tell me. You can trust me. I'm very good at keeping secrets and would never break your confidence."

The regal princess lifted a hand to her face and swiftly wiped away tears before turning from the window to look at Hannah. "I know I can trust you. That's why I'm asking for your help."

The princess took a deep breath. "Tomorrow, switch places with me for the afternoon. Be me and stay here in the suite and I'll be you. I won't be gone long—a couple of hours, four or five at the most—and then I'll return and we'll switch back again."

Hannah sat down in the chair next to her. "I want to help you, but I have to work tomorrow. Sheikh Al-Koury doesn't give time off, and even if he did, I don't know the first thing about being a princess."

Emmeline crossed the rich crimson carpet to take a seat opposite Hannah's. "Sheikh Al-Koury can't make you work if you're ill. Not even he would drag a sick woman from her bed. And you wouldn't have to leave the hotel. I could book some spa treatments for you tomorrow and you could be pampered all afternoon—"

"But I sound like an American, not a Brabant royal!"

"I heard you introduce your sheikh boss in French yesterday at the polo tournament. You speak French perfectly, without even an accent."

"That's because I lived with a family in France one year during high school."

"So speak French tomorrow. It always throws Americans." Emmeline suddenly grinned. "We can do this. Bring hair color with you in the morning, a blond color for you and your chestnut color for me, and we'll do our hair and change clothes and think what an adventure it'll be!"

There was something infectious in Princess Emmeline's laugh and Hannah reluctantly smiled back. If Hannah had met the princess in school she would have wanted to be her friend. There was something special about Emmeline, something engaging. "It'd only be for a couple of hours, just tomorrow afternoon. Right?"

Emmeline nodded. "I'll be back before dinner."

Hannah chewed the inside of her lip. "Will you be safe, going out on your own?"

"Why wouldn't I? People will think I'm you."

"But you're not doing anything dangerous, are you? Putting yourself in harm's way?"

"Absolutely not. I'm staying in Palm Beach, not traveling anywhere. Say you'll help me, Hannah, please."

How could Hannah say no? The princess was positively desperate and Hannah had never been able to say no to someone in need of help. "I'll do it, but just for the afternoon."

"Thank you! Merci!" Emmeline reached out and clasped Hannah's hand in her own. "You are an angel, and you won't regret this, Hannah. I promise you."

SPOILERS---when the romance is based on heroine's lies & Hero lets her off easily
By RomReader
Heroine agrees to impersonate a princess who happen to look like her except for the hair coloring. The agreement is to pretend to be her to her fianc Hero for a few days until the princess finishes up what she set out to do, go back to Hero's country, and switch places with her unnoticed. The problem is that the princess keeps delaying her return & heroine is left having to keep Hero from cancelling his wedding to the princess. Heroine's efforts to keep him from doing so become more involved when she finds herself very much attracted to him & wanting him to want her for herself. What happens when the princess returns?

My uneasy feeling re: the romance b/w Hero and heroine grew as the book proceeded. Heroine may have started out not having much of a choice but to divert & pretend she was Hero's fiance. She was helping the princess whom she looked like tie up loose ends before she married Hero. But it became more & more evident as the story went on that heroine's choices to lie, make Hero enamored with her, & have sex with him were all rooted in her own wants. She deluded herself just to fulfill her wants when she knew that in just a matter of days Hero would be marrying the princess. She wanted Hero to fall in love with her, have sex with her, and marry her (not necessarily in that order). There was not much guilt or remorse about her sabotaging Hero & the princess' future marriage. Or hurting them individually. She just took all that she could in the short time remaining.

When the truth about her true identity & her ploy with the princess were revealed, she gave a weak apology. She didn't even grovel for the gravity of her betrayal of Hero & the princess. Hero was hurt & upset about her lies & deception but he let her off easily. He acted like the doormat & not the strong alpha male he supposedly was. He should've put her in jail or something. Instead he let her leave his country & pined for her. The resolution was lame & so contrived. His old nanny just so happen to be there when heroine & the princess were born & separated to different parents. So, voila, Hero & heroine can now marry.

I'd skip this one.

Not Fit for a King
By Donna McBroom-Theriot
In the first book of the series, we meet Hannah, personal assistant to Sheikh Makin Al-Koury, and King Zale.

Hannah, while overseeing a polo match for the sheikh, meets Princess Emmeline who's resemblance to Hannah is uncanny. Little does she realize that her life is about to take a 180 when the princess asks her to switch places for a few hours.

When a few hours turn into a few days, she is forced to board a plane to meet the princess' intended, King Zale.

King Zale, expecting a pampered princess, is caught off guard by Hannah's feistiness, strong-willed personality, and her kind heart.

Hannah continues to impersonate Princess Emmeline, and against her will, finds herself falling in love with Zale.

Along with the primary characters, there is a small supporting cast of a loving nanny and a mentally-challenged brother that add another element to the story.

As in true Jane Porter fashion, she weaves a wonderful love story with characters you can't help but love, along with scenery so vividly described that you feel you are there. Add a little Jane intrigue, and you have the perfect weekend read.

When I am looking for a quick, fun, romantic read, I find myself looking for Jane's books. If you are a fan of Jane Porter, you will enjoy this series. If you haven't read Jane yet, this is a great series to begin with.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.

Double The Excitement!!!
By mengel2
Princess Emmeline and King Zale are to be married. Their soon to be (arranged) marriage has been known since Zale was only 15 years old. However, Princess Emmeline has been having an affair with polo player, Alejandro, throughout their one year engagement. While in Palm Beach, Princess Emmeline meets Hannah. Hannah is the spitting image of Princess Emmeline. Emmeline asks Hannah to do her a favor and switch places with her for a few hours so she can go out and not be recognized as the princess. What was suppose to be only a few hours turned into days. Hannah ended up flying to Raguva, as Princess Emmeline, where she not only met the King, but fell in love with him. While carrying on the charade of being Emmeline, Hannah not only fell for King Zale ... she fell hard. She was torn between knowing that Emmeline was not the right person for King Zale to marry and keeping up the secret that she really wasn't Princess Emmeline. Does she risk losing King Zale when he finds out that she isn't really the princess he is to marry or can she keep pretending to be Princess Emmeline until she comes to switch places with Hannah?

This book has you falling in love and believing that you don't always have control over what your heart tells you is right. I loved the ending of the book, but as not to spoil it, I will leave that to the reader to find out what happens. I gave this book a 5 out of 5 star rating. I loved the characters and story line. It had me believing in romance and true love. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good love story! Another amazing book by Jane Porter.
