SAS Portion is Awful

After reading the reviews here and of the SPSS version of the book, I took the plunge. What a mistake. Jeremy Miles butchered the SAS portion of this book, rendering it almost useless. I worked through to the end of the fourth chapter and found over half the examples had mistakes in them. Some minor, but some really serious. Through perseverence you can finally, most of the time, figure out what he's trying to show you, but that's not what I expect out of a book that costs this much. I'm trying to learn the material for my job and this book has been a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money until / unless they do a re-write. I was going to buy some of Andy Field's other books, but not after this disaster.

Disapointing - there are programming errors, also no companion website

I am returning this book. I began with the chapter on ANCOVA and found that syntax for the sample program the authors provide produces the wrong sum of squares, because the variables are entered into the model statement incorrectly. Also, the Sage publications website promises a companion website, but check this out before you consider buying. All that is offered is a poorly constructed, difficult to search through .doc file. False advertising. A doc file is not a website. The construction of the book is flimsy, even more flimsy than the SPSS version of this book. Also the pages are not glossy or color like Field's SPSS book, they are dull, low quality paper and eyesore to look at. Save your money.

I do recommend the SPSS version of this book, which is very helpful. I would recommend purchasing the SPSS book instead, and searching online to find the syntax for the types of programs you want to run using SAS.

Hope the next edition will be better!

Not a book for learning SAS

I agree with most of the other readers. The SAS part of this book is not very good. I can use it somewhat for reference when I need to perform a task in SAS, but honestly googling produces better results. There are all kinds of problems with the datasets for the exercises. I also couldn't even find Chapter 19's CosmeticSurgery.sas7bat file on the companion website. However, the writing is excellent and entertaining. So for that alone it is still worth, but don't get this book to learn SAS. I've heard the SPSS version is excellent, so if you don't care what software you use that might be less frustrating for a beginner. I'm not sure about the R edition of the book.

About the Author
When Louis Sachar was going to school, his teachers always pronounced his name wrong. Now that he has become a popular author of children’s books, teachers all over the country are pronouncing his name wrong. It should be pronounced “Sacker,” like someone who tackles quarterbacks or someone who stuffs potatoes into sacks.

Mr. Sachar received a B.A. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. His first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, was accepted for publication during his first year of law school. After receiving his law degree, he spent six years asking himself whether he wanted to be an author or a lawyer before deciding to write for children full-time. His books include Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, Wayside School is Falling Down, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, and the Marvin Redpost series.

Louis Sachar lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and their daughter, Sherre.

This set encompasses three volumes of short stories, written over several decades. Sachar reads tales ranging from hilarious to ridiculous, zany, shaggy, and just plain odd. Most are set in Wayside School, a strange place in itself, being 30 floors tall with just one room per floor. While the cast of characters remains the same, each story focuses on a different child or teacher. The first title, SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL, is by far the funniest as the quirks of specific children and teachers are dealt with in ingenious and clever ways. Sachar's deliberately paced reading is sometimes gravelly and awkward, a style that, perhaps, is meant to appeal to the middle school listeners who love these books. The books are still great but the illustrations are different!

This set, 'Wayside School Boxed Set' is also known as 'The Wayside School Collection' and contains all three of the "real" books in the 'Wayside School' series. 'Sideways Stories From Wayside School', 'Wayside School is Falling Down' and 'Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger' are as entertaining as they always were. The price is very good and you even get the three boxes together in a box. Please note that you do not get the Wayside Arithmetic books, which really were for more devoted fans and did nothing to enhance the actual storyline found in the three major/main books.

The only problem I had here was with the illustrations. I grew up reading the 'Wayside School' books, as they were illustrated by Julie Brinckloe. For years, I had a very clear picture of all the characters from Wayside School. Brinckloe's illustrations were very good at making the characters match Louis Sachar's descriptions. They've been stuck in my head for fifteen to twenty years. These three titles in the 'Wayside School' box set are illustrated by Adam McCauley and the difference is startling. I have a hard time warming up to the new (and inferior) artwork. Even though I like having the three books in a tidy little set, I definitely prefer Brinckloe's illustrations of the Wayside gang.

Everybody knows that Louis Sachar's humor was the real calling card for the 'Wayside School' series and not the pictures. However, you may want to stick with earlier copies of these books if you grew up looking at Julie Brinckloe's illustrations, as I did. Adam McCauley's illustrations are inferior in every way. The drawings are more juvenile and they don't look much like the original characters.

Don't get me wrong. The books are great, among the best children's literature you can buy for around $10 (the average price of the set). I'm still giving this four stars but you need to think about it a little before buying this box set. Unless you have no real attachment to the earlier artwork or are a first-time reader of the 'Wayside School' series, you'll want to track down the earlier copies. The "original" books are widely available for a great price in paperback, even if you have to buy them separately.

Wonderful set of books

Wonderful set of books! The box set is packaged very nicely and comes with three fantastic books that kids love. I always keep these in my classroom and love these for read alouds. Each book is filled with funny stories that the kids seem to enjoy. I would say that the stories mostly target kids 3rd grade and up. I love that each chapter is a story unto itself and can be enjoyed by everyone, even if they missed the first part of the book.

This book answered all the rest of my questions after reading her other 4 books

I read many of the reviews of this book, especially the less than 5 star ones. The Secret started me off and began to change my life, The Power took my life one step further. Then I purchased The Magic and my life changed dramatically. Yet, something was still missing from the equation. I couldn't understand how people were going from step A to Step C without a hitch. Where was Step B? I was not able to just flipe a switch in my mind easily. After 60 years of conditioning and a life full of suffering, I still had questions as to exactly how to do this with heartfelt needs and wants. Many things were starting to manifest from my work, but the deepest of things were not. How did one person go from being fired from a TV show, to deciding she would pursue her dream of having her own, to getting a network to accept it it? There had to be a step in between, but what was it? Something was just not computing in my mind. I knew I needed more answers to my questions. Then I decided to go back to the reviews of Hero. And from the negative reviews, I realized that my answers were most likely going to come from this book. People didn't like that this was about other people's experiences. But those people totally missed the boat. Many questions are asked of you through those people. They are questions they suggest you ask yourself, BEFORE you start affirming and visualizing. It is not about their own experiences per say. It is the step B I was looking for. And, yes, there is action that must be taken once you have the answers for yourself to the questions presented through these 4 or 5 people. She highlights these same 4-5 people throughout the entire book.

This book put it all together for me. Turns out it was a right decision to make it my last book of the ones she has put out. At least it was for me. And I am so grateful that I was able to read between the lines of these negative reviews to see that. It is EXACTLY what I needed. I has answered all the rest of my questions and made it easier for me to do all the things suggested in the first two books. The Magic is a stand alone book on it's own and a true life changer. That book is filled with action on how to attain sincere gratitude which, in turn, manifests all good things.

For anyone out there like me, who felt I was missing a piece of my brain in order to do this with success, I strongly and highly recommend this book. It has helped me tremendously. Just last week, I read the same tow pages over and over again, and then the answer to my deepest heartfelt life defining question was magically answered just as promised. It came in a flash, just as those people said it would. And now I know what action I must take to manifest that desire. There is some footwork involved, and THEN The Universe does the rest.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rhonda Byrne for her books. I've read many on the Law of Attraction and hers are by far the very, very best. She has changed my life. And though I have never met her, she lands on my gratitude blessings list on many days. This woman has fulfilled her mission on this planet. She has reached millions, just as she once dreamed.

This tome takes off where "The Secret" left off with great workings out of various Heros Byrne cites.

This very readable volume shouts loudly that we are all heroes and that only by concentrating our will and total being on our heart's obsession can we come to realize, against all odds, that which we truly love to want to be, to have, and to do. From reading this it is clear to me that the greatest error of my life was being interested in too many tempting subjects and topics. Had I stuck to just invention and engineering I might have exceeded some of the greatest discoveries of past heroes of civilization who blossomed in America for the last two hundred years of its existence. With the good life brought to me by these discoveries of science and the development of their mass publishing, I frittered away my life enjoying instead of inventing and discovering. Remember Charles Duell of the U. S. Patent office was wrong when he said "Everything which can be invented has been invented". Duell was proven historically dead wrong. Creation is forever ongoing. Creative genius is the hero of civilization. Likewise, not every song has been written, not every music score has been penned and played, not every human disease has been eradicated. Someday, cancer, abortion, poverty, war, hunger, fear of tyranny,will be dim recollection in the history books not yet written and YOU are the hero stock who will solve, create, innovate,and invent to become rich in the process curing these few mentioned ills of the human condition. As good as life is today, the future generations will look back on us as we do on the richest of history's societies and be thankful we have it so good. Imagine Elizabethans had no indoor plumbing, electric lighting, central heating, or personal turn key automotive transportation. Can we think ever of traveling at four miles per hour? Few of can tolerate the snails pace of twenty-five miles per hour and our traffic violation citations grow thicker monthly in our glove boxes as we fearfully await arrest on outstanding warrant. Imagine if you will, a time before Trevithick, inventor of rail transportation, Stanley, and Ford who popularized the personal automobile, when the bicycle was popularized because people could affordably travel at the blazing speed of more than twenty five miles per hour under amplification of their own muscle power; at a time when animal drayage was often no faster than four miles per hour. These things happened because each of us is a hero waiting to focus on and develop the future. This book will not tell you what to do. It will emphasize that the hero in you is capable of finding that "something" and by perseverance achieve it. Fame and fortune are the reward of the HERO.

this is a different read than what I am accustomed to by Rhonda

I am a true fan of Rhonda Byrne. I have every book she has ever written. I also enjoyed the secret and I continue to live my life in gratitude for this is what I believe in. However, this book was a bit different. I love a motivational read and something I can get inspiration from but this book did not really give me that type of read. It was all basically quotes and thoughts of others who made their dreams come true, which can be an inspiration for others depending on the persons circumstances however, it just wasn't for me.

Gr 7-10-Even though these series titles present straightforward descriptions of wars, who fought them, and how, why is a question that might occur to many readers. Nowhere is there any discussion of the social and economic factors that gave rise to fighting. Ancient World covers the rise and fall of empires and dynasties from Egypt through the Roman Empire. Specific battles, from Kadesh to Cannae, are described with accompanying diagrams. This pattern is repeated in Medieval World and Renaissance World, but the authors' dry and academic descriptions fail to capture the drama (and also the chaos, blood, and degradation) of battle. Especially in the latter two books, the texts get bogged down in complicated political background without ever helping readers grasp the significance of the events being described. One comes away from reading about the Hundred Years War or the Thirty Years War without much understanding of how these conflicts influenced the course of history. The emphasis in all three books is on European wars. A token chapter at the end of each one acknowledges that the other parts of the world witnessed major conflicts, but little detail is provided. Discussions of weapons and tactics presume a background in military history. Well-placed, full-color maps and reproductions add some attraction, as do good bibliographies. Peter Connolly's Greece and Rome at War (Stackpole, 1998) is a better choice for understanding ancient warfare, especially in the classical Mediterranean world.-David N.
