About the Author

Mel Anderson is a foster parent and attorney, currently working toward her master’s degree in social work. She is a member of the ChildSafe financial advisory board, as well as a volunteer trainer for Child Advocates of San Antonio.

Anderson is the author of The Big Fib, a children’s book published through Shadow Mountain Publishing—and the personal memoir Eleven Regrets. She currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband and children.

This isn't a type of book one "likes. " ...

This isn't a type of book one "likes." It's a brave story and it's not for lighthearted individuals. I praise the author and her siblings for surviving this awful life circumstance called Family. And I'm also in shock how US CPS program is broken, leaving so many children vulnerable and unprotected. Thank you Mel Anderson for sharing your story. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to recollect and relive your childhood.

I absolutely loved this book

I absolutely loved this book! I normally do not read child abuse books I choose to live in my world knowing yes it's real but it sickens me that people can ever harm a child. My personal interest had me buy this book and while it was horrific what happened to these children in this book I would also suggest opening your eyes to the people you live near and that is what I have learned from Eleven Regrets. I'll no longer be as na�ve to the children I see in my world. 16 children is a lot of kids and as a child I thought if you had a big family that they would start looking pale and weak I'm not that ignorant any longer. Thank you Mel for your courage to share your story God Bless you and your siblings

The book has a terribly sad story but the author was very careful to keep from pushing the reality too far. Her story was insightful, horrible and heart wrenching yet not gruesome.

This is a very good book on compressible fluid flow. It shows you the mecanism of this kind of fluid flow in such a way that it becomes very understandable. This is a very good reference to lern the basis for applications such as gas turbines and jet propulsion, for exemple.

Best engineering textbook ever

I used this book in a graduate course on compressible flow in about 1957. Without hesitation, I consider this the best textbook I have encountered in a 45 year engineering career. In later years I used it often in my work, and I still have it. I browse it occasionally when I want to be reminded how much fun being an engineer can be.

Celebriry Rocks

This is one explosive and hot story that will keep you entertained from start to finish. Twin Stepbrother Celebrity by Cassandra Dee is a quick and sexy read about Christian and Croydon , twin celebrity contractors who are stepbrothers to Lauren. Things aren’t great in the beginning for them back in HS but as adults, they seem to be on the path to being friends when they run into each at the guys’ HS reunion. Lauren has truly reinvented herself and blossomed compared to what she looked like in HS. She ends up joining the guys on their tv show and from there a relationship starts to develop. The chemistry is palpable and very hot which I liked a lot. Everything was going great until a Huge twist took the story on a turn that sent things on a steep turn. The situation looked pretty bleak on if Christian, Croydon and Lauren would be together after that huge twist happened. They are all step siblings so all relations in this story are ok because they are not blood related. I did like how the story ended up & I always enjoyed the good pace of this author’s stories.

Deliciously Sexy and Fun Story

HOT HOT HOT!!!! is the only word i can think of to describe this fun, sexy, naughty book. I really enjoyed Twin Stepbrother Celebrity by Cassandra Dee it was a quick read. This story had everything you need to make you melt and keep wanting to turn the pages. I received this book in exchange for my honest review and opinion. Lauren moves into a new house after her mom gets remarried and gets two new step brothers Croydon and Christian. She gets teased and picked on in her younger years. She is now starting her own nursing career and has enough self confidence so she decides to reach out to her stepbrothers at there 5 year high school reunion. There are so many things involved in this delicious story that i don't want to ruin it for you. Pick up your copy and start reading this hot book.

Lauren was Completely humiliated by their LaCrosse Team friends. Now 5 years later, they see each other again at a high school reunion. Will the twins and Lauren start an unforbiden relationship while cameras are now on them?

Talk about, hot, dirty, and nasty! I loved it all!

Absolutely Loved this book!

Let me just say that I absolutely loved Camilla. She was such a strong character and role model for bother her sister and her son JD. Everything Camilla did she did for the love of her family. She was willing to sacrifice her happiness and everything she had just as long as her JD and Olivia were safe and happy and strong. After going through with a business arranged marriage after a two week long trip to Vegas in which she thought she would never see her tryst Sam again, she moved forward with marrying Danny, a man she didn't love in order for her sister to get the medical care that she desperately needed. Finding out a couple months later that she was pregnant with her two week fling Sam's baby, she and decided to keep the baby. After failing to contact Sam about his child she and her husband Danny decide to tell everyone that the baby is his.

Eventually and unfortunately for only a short time she does fall and experience true unabashed love with Danny. But it only last for a time when Danny dies of complications. With his stuck up entitled family wanting custody of JD, she has to risk her family and go to the man that cruelly dumped her five years ago in Vegas.

Sam doesn't care about anything other than the fact that Camilla must be a gold hunting b^tch for her to go from one man to another in such a short time. He isn't willing to ask any questions or get any explanations. He isn't willing for anyone to paint Camilla as anything but what she is. Even if he is really really wrong. All he cares about is marrying Camilla to get full custody of his son JD.

This story was so heart wrenching and uplifting. Its crazy how one chapter I was crying and yelling at my Kindle for someone to please tell Sam to just listen and the next I was laughing at the antics of Olivia and JD. I can't express how much I loved this book. I will say that I wanted to hate Sam in some parts for being so thick headed but I guess the author just did a great job of making him more realistic like that. I would highly encourage everyone to pick up this book. It's one you will want to read over and over!

I’ve always loved Marriage of Convenience and Secret Baby stories I’m especially thrilled when I find a book that combines both tropes and Jane Peden’s The Millionaire’s Unexpected Proposal did not disappoint.

This is a wonderfully well written book with characters you want to root for. With just the right amount of conflict and sexual tension this book pulls you in and keeps you reading long past the time you should have stopped. I was even late for work!

I’m really hoping this is a first in a new series because I’d love to read Richie and Jonathan’s stories, too!

Love those sexy millionaires!

Sam Flanagan won his biggest jury trial ever. While celebrating in Las Vegas, Sam met Camilla and started a steamy affair with her. After two weeks Sam realized that his plans for starting his own law firm did not include a woman he picked up in a bar in Vegas. Sam ended the affair and went back to Florida to open his practice. Five years later Camilla located Sam's office wanting to ask him for a huge favor. What she had to tell him and ask him was not at all what he was expecting.

Great story! Sam is one of those sexy millionaires that thinks he's got it all figured out but with Camilla he couldn't be further from the truth. If they had only realized communication was the key, earlier, they might have saved themselves some precious time. JD was so adorable! This is a highly entertaining story and very well written.

Lovers of Kubrick, This is the book for you!

This book is meant to be a complete breakdown of the themes, styles and subject matter of some of Stanley Kubricks best films, and it succeeds on every level. For anyone who has been confused as to what messages Kubrick was trying to convey to his audience, this is the book for you. It describes in detail every message, every detail about how someone should go about viewing any and all of Stanley Kubrick's greatest films. This is a great reference for anyone who has ever questioned Kubrick's style as a director. It also bring into light the ideals Kubrick wanted his audience to see through his films, the main one being "humanity and the world that we live in." If anyone is a fan of Stanley Kubrick's films, his life or film in general than I suggest you get this book!

I love Kubrick, but wouldn't recommend this book...

My understanding is that this is book is a textbook. I feel sorry for the people who have to wade through it. It's painful. The author attributes a significant amount of thought to various themes/concepts, but I found it way overboard.

This is the first book I've read which analyzes films/books in this manner, but the over-analysis of everything sucks the life/joy out of the process of analysis.

If you're someone who enjoys thinking about/discussing movie thematics with friends/family, I don't see you enjoying this book. There are a few interesting nuggets here and there, but the tone of the book comes off as pretentious dribble.

A superb primary text perfect for self-directed study

From the stylings of pre-Socratic thinkers to the work of Plato and Aristotle, to an overview of more modern philosophers such as Descartes, Nietzsche, Kant, and Hegel, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy touches upon the quandaries that have hounded thinkers throughout history: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of what true freedom is. "If not all acts are free in the same way, should freedom itself depend on the degree of enlightenment it brings? Or is every man essentially free in so far as he is a man? If this is the case, we must not simply identify the capacity for being free with the enactment of freedom. We still don't know how freedom can be made concrete in the world." Accessible to readers of all backgrounds, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy is a superb primary text perfect for self-directed study.

Surprisingly, this works.

As someone who has devoted four decades of his adult life to either teaching or studying philosophy (or both), I was skeptical when a publisher sent me this little book entitled "A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy." How could anyone provide an adequate overview of philosophy in 30 short snippets that come to just over 100 pages of text?

When I began reading I soon discovered that Dominique Janicaud had done precisely that. Written originally for his 20-year-old daughter (and translated into English by Lisabeth During), "A Beginner's Guide" truly lays the foundation for reasoning philosophically and shows why this is important. Along the way Janicaud briefly describes some of the main ideas of philosophers as diverse as Socrates, Heraclitus, Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Heidegger. Needless to say, in such a short book, there are some important figures that have gone missing, such as Aquinas and Wittgenstein. But the reader will come away from this book with at least a glimpse into what some major philosophers have thought and why they have thought the way they have.

However, what is most beneficial in this book is not the philosophical date it provides (which is admittedly sketchy) but the love for philosophy that shines through and the raising of the questions that philosophers have asked since the time of the ancient Greeks (as well as why these questions are truly important). If this book inculcates a love of philosophical thought and a desire to learn more in one individual, it will have been worth the effort.

It's Okay

Gracefully and pleasantly written, I didn't think this book said much.It's not really an introduction to philosophy.It's a meditation of sorts by the author on why philosophy matters .I enjoyed some of his comments on the impenetrable ( for me) Hegel.If you read this you will probably enjoy it.However if you don't , you aren't missing much.

About the Author
Christopher Walsh is a Harvard Medical School professor emeritus who serves as a senior advisor to the ChEM-H Center at Stanford University. He has authored hundreds of papers and books, including the predecessor to this title, Antibiotics: Origins, Actions, Resistance (2003). Dr. Walsh is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society and a co-recipient of the 2010 Welch Prize in Chemistry.

Timothy Wencewicz is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis. After receiving his PhD at the University of Notre Dame, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Christopher Walsh s laboratory at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wencewicz s research centers on antibiotic drug discovery, natural product biosynthesis, and targeted drug delivery across bacterial membranes.

The Most Ironic Title in Literature

Edelweiss? Noble White, the shy alpine flower that so quickly vanishes after spring. Are we readers to look for meaning in Nabokov's choice of the name Martin Edelweiss for his focal character? A good deal is said about the name early in the book, and we're reminded of it at crucial moments throughout. Just a few pages of Nabokov's so-carefully-crafted prose inclines this reader to suppose that nothing in "Glory" is merely incidental, that every detail is laden with pertinence. Whatever else one says about this novel, the first fact is that it's gloriously written. Every sentence snaps the reader's mind into focus. Every description is a poem in itself. Every characterization is a full dramatic portrait of individual flesh and blood.

Martin Edelweiss is a frivolous young man embedded among Russian emigres utterly trivialized by the Bolshevik Revolution, about which we hear only frivolous rumors and reports in ephemeral newsprint. The only position Martin's querulous society seems to take toward the momentous events in their homeland is to wish they hadn't happened, but make no mistake, this a novel about the Revolution, seen through a lens of irrelevance. This is also a novel about the meaning of being Russian, though Nabokov conveys his meaning through the subtlest indirection. There's no ambiguity whatsoever about the ending of the novel. The meaning is as clear as plasma and as ominous as a drum-roll to a prisoner awaiting execution, but I do not choose to pre-empt anyone's reading excitement by declaring the obvious.

At the same time, "Glory" is a coming-of-age novel, similar to other such novels about young men going off to college. Scott Fitzgerald's "This Side of Paradise" and E.M. Forster's "The Longest Journey" might offer interesting comparisons. In all three, a sensitive young man confronts the tawdriness of the intellectual life, slips into depression over his own mediocrity, falls hopelessly in love with a disdainful beauty while at the same time exploring lust with more accessible lasses, and wrestles with the identity of a seemingly more well-prepared friend. Martin, however, isn't a titan waiting to be awakened to his own worth at the end of the novel. Nabokov takes pain to show us that Martin is NOT a poet, not a budding genius of any sort, just a modestly intelligent everyman of no particular bent. In fact, Martin's only talent seems to be at tennis. Like a young George Orwell, Martin stumbles into a brief romance with the simple life of honest toil, dwelling incognito for a 'chapter' in a wine-growing village in southern France. But, like most of Martin's experiences, this pastoral interlude sinks quickly into the chasm of memory. Above all, this is a novel about memory. It begins with Martin's memories of childhood. Martin's perceptions are all foreshadowed, and his actions are all predetermined, by his memories. Even the passing moment is no more than a memory.

Martin doesn't tell his story in the first person. Nabokov clings to Martin's shoulder like a personal daemon, or to be blunt, like a 19th C omniscient narrator. When suddenly, in the last chapter, the novelist shifts his perch to another shoulder, it's both a brilliant literary trick and a lucid statement of Martin's fate.

"Glory" is a translation from Russian of an early novel by a writer who went on to create far more famous books in English. Perhaps that explains why it's less widely read than the Forster or Fitzgerald novels mentioned above. It's the best book of the three by far, and proves beyond a doubt that Nabokov could write traditional narrative as brilliantly as the more idiosyncratic interior surrealism for which he is famous.

I always pick up one of the "Russian" novels by Nabokov with a certain thrill of anticipation. Not only is the reader about to be thrust into the Russian emigre population that moved into the large European cities following the Revolution of 1917, but is also to me made party to the evolving literary genius of the young Nabokov.
In this book, which the author describes as soaring "to the heights of purity and melancholy that I have only attained in the much later Ada," he deals with the themes of alienation and the romantic musings which accompany the lives of the lonely and unspectacular individuals who make their way through this world. For Martin Edelweiss, the main character of the book, life has become a series of romantic possibilities: "a necklace of lights" seen from a train in the French night, the woman who throws a brief glance in his direction, footpaths dissolving into a forest - all these become possible "gallant feats," if only in his mind.
Although Nabokov downplays the similarity between the background of Martin and his own, there is a great deal in this book that is autobiographical. The author's years of emigre life in various European cities, his university days at Cambridge, and his period of manual labor in the south of France all find their way into this novel. Perhaps because of the author's emotional involvement with the book, Glory brings to life a softer Nabokov, one who is content to let the book follow its own winding path and who refrains from interjecting the tautness of his earlier efforts.
As a stylist, Nabokov is incomparable and to read one of his books is an experience of sheer wonder. If this book does not rank with his highest achievements, it certainly demonstrates a more mature author at work, one who is on the brink of greatness.

Young man's choice between conformity and individualism

I wanted to read fairly short, impressive book during my winter break/holidays. So, Nabokov came to my mind. I picked up "Glory" and I was taken from the moment I started reading. Book about young Martin Edelweiss, of Swiss and Russian heritage, follows his quiet life from his early childhood to his life of the grown up, young man. His parents divorce during his childhood, and Martin's father dies soon afterwards. Martin's mother re-marries to his uncle who sends young Martin to the Cambridge University. Here, Martin acquires new friends and even falls in love with Sonia, ruthless daughter of the Russian emigre editor. Sonia seems to enjoy seducing young man but is ever so easy in discarding them in order to avoid long term commitment. Martin is no exception. And after college days are over, Martin decides to travel around Europe: England, Switzerland, Germany. His uncle/stepfather is concerned about Martin's lack of desire to find suitable position in order to ensure steady flow of income. And while Martin's friends are building their careers in journalism, writing and other "honorable" professions, he seems to rather enjoy doing manual labor in order to find his true self. Until one day - he goes away. Forever.

Very powerful novel. It made me Nabokov's fan in a matter of moment.

Esta trilogía a tenido muchas críticas, yo aún sólo he leído este relato corto, pensé que mejor empezar con un punto de vista diferente de la Selección... el de Maxon. Que no me ha dejado indiferente y no parece tan superficial como lo ponen algunas, de hecho me ha gustado.
Interesante su forma de pensar y como no es tan fácil como parece y no es tan superficial como se ve, sólo le queda aceptar lo que le toca, muchos lo hacen así.

Excellent tuning book

I am a long time DBA, turned consultant. I have more than 25 years of tuning experience and have been applying many of Kevin's advices for years.
This is an excellent tuning book, presenting the formalized tuning methodology for tuning queries against Oracle RDBMS. Not only is it full of seemingly apparent but frequently forgotten ideas like "learn your query", it also covers advanced topics like dynamic sampling and cardinality feedback. I like the book a lot. Why did I decide to give it only 4 stars out of possible 5? For two reasons: the examples are mainly written using the Oracle SQL dialect, with very few written using ANSI SQL. ANSI SQL is the dialect most frequently generated by the now ubiquitous application generator. The second reason for deciding to rate the book by only 4 stars is a huge emphasis on Exadata. I do not meet Exadata that frequently and I do not consider that part relevant for a general tuning book.
Those criteria are, of course, my personal rating criteria. Once again, I consider those shortcomings minor and want to stress that I have thoroughly enjoyed myself reading the book.

An excellent book on oracle sql tuning

This is a great book on SQL tuning for Oracle. I have several years of experience yet I still have lot to learn, esp in SQL tuning. There are several books in the market which are a rehash of the manuals or just skim over this topic or too hard to follow. This book takes the basic topics related to SQL tuning and presents them in a logical and coherent manner. I learned a lot about reading the sql statements and the plans, tuning the SQLs, look for hot spots and apply a standard approach to tuning. The book lays the foundation to understand SQL, takes you through a series of journeys into the SQL world which is helpful to understand SQL tuning.

Each chapter deals with specific topic. The first chapter provides a good set of basic building blocks on how to tune queries. Great ideas with the FRP method approach. After reading the first chapter I tuned a query with several underlying tables by selecting a 'driving table'.

The second chapter explains cardinalities and why cardinalities are important and how the plans could go for a toss if cardinalities are off. I have read about the cardinalities in several other places on the internet, but the chapter explains the whole thing from the basics. A must read for any tuner. Chapter 3 elaborates how to choose indexes and deals with ACCESS, FILTER and post table filtering predicates.

The fourth chapter is on joins. This is the best chapter of the book in my view. The chapter deals with the most commonly used join methods such as nested loops, sort merge, etc and goes on to explain in detail the mechanisms involved under the hood. It also talks about when each case would be a best fit and its limitations and the most common problems each join method faces. The explanation of optimal, single pass and multi pass joins is just superb.

The fifth chapter deals with hints and says why the author is not totally against it or for it and talks about cases where certain handful of hints could be useful. The hints it talks about are what you have likely seen before, but the chapter explains why they are important and when they can be used. I have seen other works that deal about pretty much every hint in the manual without good explanation and why they should or should not be used, but this chapter focuses on the important hints and how and when to use them to your advantage. Chapter 6 called 'Basics'is a must read for people new and experienced alike. This tells you the most common mistakes people keep making and why you need to avoid them. I have a feeling when the second edition comes out this chapter will expand (and it has to) and probably get pushed to the front.
Chapter 8 is an introduction to exadata.

There are some places where the book can make some improvements, but nothing is a show stopper for me. The indexes at the end of the book can be more inclusive of the contents in the book. I would also like to see more SQL tuning examples possibly from various environments - this book already has several examples, but I would like to see examples from various types of systems like certain packaged applications, etc.

Conclusion:

This book is a great start if you are beginning with oracle or good booster if you are already an oracle practitioner. I have read several topics discussed in this book in bits and pieces before from various sources, but the book gives a logical structure in taking you through various topics and lays a good foundation for moving from the 'beginner' level to 'intermediate' level in understanding and tuning SQL. I will keep the book with me for a long time as reference. Most of the information in the chapters apply to almost all versions of oracle since they deal with the core basics of tuning, so do not think you should not buy this book if you are reading this 10 years from today.

An excellent SQL tuning methodology

This book is the best book on SQL tuning that I have ever read. I do not say that because I was involved in the technical edit (I did one chapter) but because it is true. The author goes through what one might call the basics of tuning SQL, but that is not "basic" in the sense of "elementary": it is "basic" in the sense that these are things you must get right before doing anything else, or you will never get anywhere. Do not think that this book is for beginners. You need to know your way around SQL and DB admin already, and then it will teach you a lot.
For me, the highlight is the exposition of what I see as the three most critical decisions that the optimizer must make: join order, join method, and access method. This details why these decisions are so critical, how the optimizer makes them, why it sometimes makes the wrong decision, and how to prevent these errors. There is a very nice methodology (the "filtered rows percentage" method) presented for this..
The book does not go into more esoteric subjects, such as tuning non-mergeable views or using non-heap table structures, but it covers everything that you need to fix nine out of ten of your fixable SQL tuning problems. Next time you are looking for an enjoyable way to spend a Friday afternoon at the end of a hard week, find some horrendous query with an execution plan that takes a kilometer of continuous stationery to print, and use the techniques in this book to tune it from ten hours down to ten seconds. That's what you will get from this book: a method for doing just that.
