About the Author
Jonathan Clayden is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester, where he and his research group work on the construction of molecules with defined shapes - in particular those where control of conformation and limitation of flexibility is important. Jonathan was awarded a
BA (Natural Sciences) from Churchill College, Cambridge before completing his PhD with Stuart Warren, also at the University of Cambridge. He has been at the University of Manchester since 1994. Stuart Warren is a former lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and
Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, Stuart completed his PhD at Cambridge with Malcolm Clark before carrying out post-doctoral research at Harvard University. He became a teaching fellow at Churchill College in 1971, and remained a lecturer and
researcher at Cambridge until his retirement in 2006.

Not helpful for the urban traveler

I purchased the LP Barcelona guide to help with a five night trip. We certainly wanted help getting around to the major sites, but I selected this book over some of the other guides knowing we'd be in an iconic city known for it's great food and night-life and trusting LP's reputation as catering to a more hip audience looking for something more than just a tourist experience.

The dining and nightlife recommendations were pretty awful. We stayed in El Born so we'd hoped to get some recommendations for some more local/authentic spots there as well as the still a bit seedy but quite hip El Raval. Too many of the restaurant recommendations are for the super upscale/touristy L'Eixample and touristy places by the beach. We found Yelp to be a much better guide for places to eat and drink than this book.

Given that: once you're not getting any useful info to eat/drink the rest of the book falls short as a regular tour guide to the main attractions. Prior to Barcelona we had spent a few days in Provence France and used Rick Steve's guide there. His guide is full of helpful tips (go on this walking route for a nice experience, make sure you get to this place early, here's a way to skip the lines). The LP Barcelona Books doesn't give this type of help. Not even something as simple as informing you to getting your tickets online on your smartphone for Sagrada Familia will save you having to wait an hour in line. Another example is it has a chapter dedicated to an excursion to Parc Guell (famous Gaudi park) and Camp Nou (FC Barcelona stadium). These two places are on complete opposite sides of the city. It doesn't make sense to group these things that are a two hour walk apart unless you're going to provide some suggestions on how to get between the two by the Metro or such. It's just not helpful to plan your day in a useful organized way.

I can't recommend a better Barcelona guide as this was the only one I purchased, but had I to do it over I'd certainly have gone with Rick Steve's.

Jane is also academic representative on the Board of the UK Network of Sex Work Projects (2010 – current). Very informative text about programming a typical prototype Elevator control system

I used this text to get some idea to implement and design my final year collage project. Text also helped me to better understand how a typical VFD can be used and how a PLC can be programmed to implement an elevator controller system. After item was purchased, I emailed the prove of sale and got all related control programs and managed to use computer simulator to test the functionality of the software and I learned about a typical elevator system without even going through building its hardware. I recommend this item highly.

I am a maintenance technician this product has helped me to better understand how a typical VFD can be used and how a PLC can be programmed to implement an elevator controller. I recommend it highly.

Do Not Buy, Save Your Money

Don't waste your money. Use it instead for a good tax accountant that has the proper licensing for dealing with the IRS for you that comes highly recommended or a tax lawyer(which is more expensive). The IRS agent I've dealt with was arrogant and believed he was/is above the law regardless of what anybody might tell, they pretty much are. They first agent you see face to face has all the power and all the cards. If you piss them off for ANY reason, they can and will make your life a living hell. You ARE guilty until you PROVE yourself innocent, regardless of what the law may state these are the real world facts. The IRS agent said to me: "I wouldn't be here if you were innocent". Thankfully it was the H&R Block tax software that had made multiple mistakes by purposely putting some deductions in 2 or more places which flagged me as double dipping. My excellent tax accountant new EXACTLY where it happened as soon as I told her what tax software I used. If I had followed some of the suggestions in this book I would have been severely screwed. False confidence in dealing with the IRS is a HUGE mistake.

Key Changes to the Fourth Edition

*The release of this new edition was prompted by the development of new versions of the major phylogenetic software discussed in the Third Edition, namely MEGA and MrBayes. MEGA5 not only has several capabilities that were not present in MEGA4, but it also involves a significantly altered interface. MrBayes 3.2 also has several important new features, and it requires input files that differ significantly from the templates provided in the Third Edition.

*Two important advanced topics have been added. Chapter 12 introduces a new web-based tool, GUIDANCE, that greatly facilitates making robust alignments by identifying both regions and sequences that contribute to poor alignment. Chapter 15 introduces the estimation of phylogenetic networks for circumstances where trees are an inadequate means of describing historical relationships because different genes, or different parts of a gene, have different evolutionary histories.

*Coverage of two subjects--estimation of phylogenetic trees by Maximum Likelihood and reconstruction of ancestral protein and gene sequences--has been completely rewritten because MEGA5 now offers those capabilities and readers no longer need to learn additional programs to carry out those methods. Using MEGA in place of MrBayes for the reconstruction of ancestral sequences not only simplifies but speeds up the process dramatically, reducing the time required from hours or days to seconds. A new utility program to facilitate parsing the MEGA output is provided.

*The fourth edition is illustrated by new screen shots throughout in order to show the current versions of all software. These illustrations are now in full color, enabling readers to more easily identify elements in which color plays an important informational role.

*This edition is organized into sixteen (versus eleven) chapters, to better isolate important topics. For instance, acquisition of sequences and alignment of sequences are now separated into independent chapters.

*About 75% of the text is completely rewritten.

About the Author

Barry G. Hall is Director of the Bellingham Research Institute, Adjunct Professor of Genomics and Bioinformatics at the Allegheny-Singer Research Institute's Center for Genomic Sciences, and Professor Emeritus of Biology, University of Rochester. Prior to his tenure at Rochester, he taught in the Basic Sciences department of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical School and the Molecular and Cell Biology department of the University of Connecticut. He has held visiting professorship positions at the Université Paris-Sud (Orsay, France) and the University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Hall earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Genetics, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the University of Washington, Seattle, respectively. He was a founding member of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution and has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, and on the Editorial Boards of Genetica, the Journal of Molecular Evolution, and the Journal of Bacteriology. In addition to the three prior editions of Phylogenetic Trees Made Easy, Dr. Hall is the author or coauthor of numerous journal articles, editorials, book reviews, and contributed book chapters. His current research interests include the molecular epidemiology of bacterial pathogens and application of genomic analysis to rapid prediction of antibiotic sensitivity in clinical applications.

Very useful for Newbies

I bought this book for a class and it was very useful. If you are not familiar with phylogenetics, this might be the perfect pick. In the beginning of each chapter the program introduces the important terminology and background, and suggests you the literature for further reading (mostly free available papers). The major part of each chapter consists of a step by step hand on tutorial of the free phylogenetic software MEGA 5.05, which is very powerful and versatile. I really liked this book and learned a lot, thus I can highly recommend it.

Nice manual for Mega5.1

This is a very nice, well written manual by example of how to use the Mega5.1 I tried the examples on MacOsX 10.8.3. The software works, the examples work. You pretty much follow step by step and get publication quality results on your family of proteins or genes.

Good manual for beginers

This is a good beginers handbook in phylogeny.It is limitd in its scope as a manual for PAUP but in the last editions it managed to expand beyond PAUP. I recomend it for who is interested in analysing its seuences of interest in an appropriate way and for the first time is asking questios related to phylogeny.
