It's a form of megalomania, of course, one famous card collector once said of his hobby—and, as Jamieson explains, there are plenty of people willing to cash in on collectors' obsessions; the secondary market for baseball cards may be as much as a half-billion dollars annually. It used to be even stronger: Jamieson got interested in the history of baseball cards when he rediscovered his own adolescent stash only to find that its value had plummeted in the mid-1990s. His loss is our gain as he tracks the evolution of the card from its first appearance in cigarette packs in the late 19th century through the introduction of bubble gum and up to the present. The historical narrative is livened by several interviews, including conversations with the two men who launched Topps (for decades the first name in cards) and a collector who's dealt in million-dollar cards. Jamieson also digresses neatly into curiosities like the Horrors of War card set, the legendary Mars Attacks, and a profanity-laced card featuring Cal Ripken's little brother. Priceless Memories

As a kid growing up in the '50s & '60s, collecting baseball cards was a natural part of our existence. Abusing our prized possessions was also a part of the process; a '56 Yogi Berra made my Schwinn sound like a Harley (not really). At the time, I didn't realize that was a very costly sound effect; who knew that shoebox full of Musials, Williams, and Mantles could someday pay for junior's college education, if the owner of those gems had sense enough to keep them in "mint condition"? Needless to say, I didn't catch on until twenty some odd years later; and like everything that has a "market value", baseball card portfolios have been whacked in recent years; just like everything else.

Dave Jamieson has compiled a wonderfully researched history of the baseball card phenomenon, which brought back many memories for me; not only of my innocent youth, but of my not so innocent adulthood, when I tried to grab the hottest cards at the best possible prices. I used to buy 'em by the set, and horde them like a miser, hoping they'd increase in value. Naturally, I now keep my collection in mint condition, and I'll spend hours gazing at baseball's not so distant past, and wonder why Roger Maris isn't in the Hall of Fame.

If you're a baseball fan, regardless of your obsession with collecting cards, you'll certainly enjoy this book. It's a home run.

smoke 'em if you got 'em

Gran Torino left me thirsty for Pabst; this book left me jonesing for gum, smokes and a '52 Topps Mickey Mantle. Mint Condition wonderfully explains the incredible journey of the baseball card from its early tobacco days to the wax packs of today. It provides a unique education in American history by showing how tobacco, MLB & chewing gum owe a huge debt to baseball cards and the kids who bought (or forced their parents to buy) them. But my favorite thing about reading Mint Condition is that it caused me to pull out my own stash of prized cards from 20yrs ago which evoked so many great memories.

Interesting overview of the history of the baseball card business

If, like me, you are a baseball fan who collected baseball cards as a kid, you will find this account of the history of the baseball card industry to be a good read. It occurrs to me that there are characteristic differences between how a journalist and an academic approach a book like this (I'm assuming from his bio on the flap of the dust jacket that Jamieson is a journalist). With an academic, you are likely to get a rather dry discussion, but one that is thorough. With a journalist, you are likely to get a lively discussion, but one that leaves some holes in the narrative. Jamieson's discussion is certainly lively. He spends considerable time on some of the oddball characters who have been involved in the baseball card industry over the years. Getting to know something about these people makes the story more interesting, which is why journalists always include the "personal element" in a news story. If you want to write a newspaper article about an increase in foreclosures, you start the article with an account of the Smith family being forced out of their home. Only then do you give the reader the big picture. Jamieson takes this approach.

An academic is more likely to be concerned with nailing down all the facts, and adds color only as an afterthought. In a book like this, the journalistic approach is probably the better way to go. But there were a number of points where I wished Jamieson had taken more trouble with the facts. For example, he spends some time on the boom and crash in baseball card production and in the prices of collectible cards during the late 1980s and early 1990s. But I didn't feel I was getting the complete story. It would have been nice to have had some more details on how high the prices of particular cards went and how far they crashed. I was also a little unclear about the transition from the collapse in the mid-1990s to the current situation. What I can gather from the book is that since the mid-1990s, only older cards (pre-1960?) in excellent condition have much value. But for these cards, values have soared. I think that is what he is saying happened, but he never quite spells it out, focusing instead on giving accounts of the some of the big dealers in the current market. Similarly, he gives the impression that when Marvin Miller became director of the Major League Players Association, the MLPA had complete authority to negotiate contracts with baseball card companies. Was that really the case? Even though the photographs of the players show them in team uniforms, MLB had no right to receive payments from the card companies? When discussing more recent years, though, he gives the impression that both the MLPA and MLB negotiate (jointly) with the card companies. Seems as if the rules changed somehow. It would have been worthwhile to have straightened out this story. Finally, although he provides a Notes section that gives his sources -- somewhat unusual in a book like this -- the book does not have an index, which greatly reduces its usefulness as a reference.

A fascinating melange of historical names and events.

What an absolute joy of a book. Goldsmith seems to have found the perfect centerof the femininist storm in Victoria Woodhull, an outspoken advocate of women's rights, free love, and spiritualism. The telling of her tale (and this book reads like a plotted novel) involves the inclusion of tales and talk from Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Ward Beecher, President Ulysses S. Grant, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and cameo appearances from a host of others (including the prudish New York City "in"fighter, Anthony Comstock). Much of the telling involves the infamous Tilton-Beecher scandal, a story whose recitation touches on much of the post-Civil War atmosphere of spiritualism,financial skullduggery, the new religious practices of revised Calvinism, and, of course, equal rights for women. This is a fascinating read and wonderfully written. You don't need to be a history buff to pick this up.

A Treasure Chest of Fascinating, Little-Known History

Goldsmith has done a real service with this book. It is more or less the history of the 19th-century women's suffrage movement, with special emphasis on the influence of Spiritualism and on the life of Victoria Woodhull (of whom I had never before heard, even though I regard myself as fairly well-versed in American history).
The book is full of fascinating characters and events, most of which are given unconscionably short shrift in our educational system. Goldsmith fleshes out the stories and personalities of many people who were previously just vague images in my mind, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Henry Ward Beecher. It seems from this book that female suffrage could have occurred as much as 50 years earlier than it did, if it hadn't been for a couple of missteps on the part of the supporters of suffrage. For one thing, there was a bitter division among the suffragettes about whether the female right to vote should be part of the movement for enfranchising the recently freed slaves. Sadly, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, despite her many wonderful and even heroic contributions to the movement, comes across as an out-and-out racist on this issue, and probably damaged the very cause to which she devoted her life. Secondly, some of the foremost spokespeople for female suffrage got caught up in unrelated, controversial issues, and even in personal sexual scandals.
If you have an interest in American history, you may very well have the same reaction I did while reading this book. Almost every other page, I found myself exclaiming, "Hey, I didn't know that! How come that's not in any of the history books?"
The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that I think the organization and focus could be a little better. The book isn't organized strictly chronologically, and it jumps from one character to another without apparent reason.
But there's just too much really good stuff here to give anything less than four stars, and I have no quarrel with those who have given it five. You won't often pick up a book written for a general audience and learn so many interesting facts that you probably didn't know.

Exciting, disturbing, well-presented history/biography!

This book is huge at 560 pgs; of course, i guess that's nothing compared to these past couple Harry Potters so perhaps i should just say, "substantial." It covers literally Woodhull's entire life (and a good deal of her sister's, Tennessee Claflin), as well as offering am in-depth view of the political and social climate at the time. It devotes a particular amount of time to the changing nuances of her "free love" doctrine and other participants in that movement (one which was, most certainly, ahead of its time--we don't generally think of Victorian times and Free Love in the same boat these days), and the Beecher-Tilton adultery trial.
I found the book to be facinating from a suffrage-history POV, contrasting events depicted/documented within with my memories of the "women's movement" from history classes. Goldsmith isn't afraid to throw stones (mostly by quoting their own less than tolerant words) at suffrage icons Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, and others, in the course of depicting an unbiased view of the debate that raged for both women's and black men's suffrage at the time. She is both sympathetic to Victoria and Tennessee (she does a very good job in depicting the bizarre, abusive, nomadic carnival-like nature of their childhoods and family life while growing up), and willing to point out their flaws and transgressions (both women engaged in prostitution, blackmail, and other acts of "questionable ethics").
There's not as much focus on the Spiritualism movement, though the overview is thorough and the author depicts in great detail the ways in which Victoria and Tennessee were involved in it as trance speakers and predictors of the future, both from a very young age. She presents the oracles and visions and claims of spiritualists without passing judgement on them, though it's hard not to do so onesself as a modern skeptic reader--the descriptions of Victoria's frequent "possession" by spirit guides, particularly when speaking in public and in other stressful situations, coupled with her traumatic childhood, are reminiscent of depictions of modern dissociative identity disorders.
To read the book as a modern woman is somewhat horrific; one can't help but think along the lines of "what would I have done back then," when Anthony Comstock was arresting people for even discussing contraception and women were considered the property of their husbands. Goldsmith investigates a lot of related issues, giving brief synopses of cases of abortionists, midwives, spinsters-by-choice, servant-class mothers of illegitimate children who were imprisoned for "infanticide" when their babies died in childbirth...ugh. Horrible reading, but important.
All in all a facinating overview of activism, alternative spirituality, and the tumultuous political climate of post-civil-war America, centered around the life story of the country's first female Presidential candidate.

Engaging

The poor old IT department is still a most misunderstood beast far too often. Despite technology being a critical component for most companies, it is often side-lined or viewed with hostility. How to really get IT on side and make it a critical part of a company? How to make company leaders really understand the demands of the digital age? That is the challenge set by the author.

From assessing current and future IT needs, aligning processes and technologies to tweaking corporate priorities and changing the underlying culture, a complete road map or schedule is offered, backed by case studies and commentary from industry participants. Of course, the hard work still remains but this “go-to book” will give you a lot of support and might keep you sane and focussed whilst you are fighting against your corporate colleagues.

The book’s publicity material succinctly describes matters: “The new IT is more than computing power. It balances strategy and delivery. It’s interactive and inclusive. It’s as omnipresent as the smart phone and just as revolutionary. It equips you with the tools you need to succeed in reframing the IT conversation and propelling your business forward.” This is hard to deny. The book can be a hard, challenging read but your patience may be rewarded. It could have been a little more focussed, reaching out to grab the reader and make them really understand the necessity of a specific task or process, but not at the cost of otherwise watering down the great information within. Yet some humour shined through, such as the author noting “… if I see one more Sun Tzu command in a business book, I'll burn my own armada.”

Joking aside, the author nailed perfectly how some senior executives perform. As noted in the book: “I joke in my conference keynotes that “there's nothing more dangerous than a CEO who's just read an airline magazine.” After all, we've all sat across a conference room table from an impatient executive who's asked about a current trend without understanding the complexity of its implementation. (Cloud, anyone?)”

Anyone who has worked in IT management surely will recognise this. Yet are we as advanced and integrated as we think? The author isn’t so sure. “The new IT organization is hardly the result of a revolution. It's more like a picnic where everyone brings his or her own favourite dish to the table, often blissfully unaware of what's already being served. The result is often many salads and desserts and a dearth of main courses. Guests leave craving some-thing more substantial.” Maybe many guests are still hungry and unsatisfied.

Possibly this book can be the cookbook you’ve always needed but didn’t know existed.

Go to Book on IT Leadership/Management

I'm sure I'm breaking some etiquette rule about commenting on a book the author has so graciously quoted you in (full disclosure); but I must. This is a 'go to' book on IT leadership and management. It's fresh. Engaging. Practical and direct. Written in English vs. techno-naba, this is a book every CIO can share and discuss with other line-of-business executives to strengthen shared goals and create open conversation. Case in point: check out the IT Self-Assessment section one. My personal favorite is Jill's chart on Common Excuses for the IT Status Quo. Milk and cookies any one? Not only can the CIO read and benefit from this book herself; but it can also be used as a great team building and learning tool for the entire IT management team. I wish I'd had this book 20 years ago. CIO/IT Leader or Executive struggling with the role of the IT function in your company: Get this book.

It would be unfair to state that Jill’s book is just another piece of reference material with earmarked pages and highlighted lines for IT Leaders to place on a bookshelf.

Jill understands what matters to business users in a world of ‘integrated technology’ where data collection and consumption are daily tasks that dictate the manner in which they operate and communicate; her book provides a straightforward, practical guide to create a new ‘IT Operations Model and Mindset’ that has been lacking for quite some time.

For expert and layman alike

Fuller's excellent work does a good job of making the complexities of Hinduism comprehensible even to a non-expert--not an easy task. The Hindu religion is of course not an institution in the Western sense, but rather a collection of beliefs and practices, ever-changing, in many cases highly local, and bewildering to the Western monotheistic mind with its "330 million" gods. Its complexities both drive and result from the infinite complexities of Indian society itself, and an understanding of Hinduism is crucial for any understanding of the country. I read the book in preparation for my second trip to India, and it made the experience infinitely more enjoyable and understandable.
Fuller's explanation of the principle of "hierarchy" as the underpinning for both Hinduism and Indian society as a whole was very enlightening, as one realizes that it is completely antithetical to Western thought which values individual freedom above all else. Particularly good is the description of the structure of Hindu worship, or "puja," which despite its infinite variations Fuller contends consists of 16 (more or less) steps, of offerings and services to the deity. The description of the caste system, which bears almost no relationship to the Western notion of class, is excellent. Fuller's explanation of the concept of purity, and how it drives the status and treatment of women, is also very good.
More casual readers may feel a bit bogged down as later chapters explore more esoteric subjects such as devotionalism and village rituals. From a scholarly point of view, I'd say this book is at the college text level, and like college texts it gets more complex as you work your way through. But this work is more than worth it even if you focus on the first few chapters. Highly recommended!

Filling the gap

Fuller provides an up-to-date presentation of the popular practice of Hinduism in India. Using ethnographic data and personal field research in a Minakshi temple in south India, Fuller provides a window into daily worship unladen with ancient textual scriptures and controversial philosophies, however, giving careful representation of the traditional, and mainly centralist, view of Hinduism as a point of reference. Fuller presents the basic why's of Hindu practice in an easy-to-follow format and language throughout the text. Beginning with an anthropological account of Hindu society in India, he continues with chapters on gods and goddesses, worship, sacrifice, rituals, devotion, pilgrimage, and misfortune, giving special attention to women's issues in the second chapter on devotion. Simply The Best Progression Betting Book, Ever!

Koetsch has conducted the most complete evaluation of progression betting strategies published to date. Anyone who has visited Vegas or Atlantic City, and dropped a small fortune when a progressive betting strategy went south will appreciate the extensive work Koetch has done to help change that result. He examines the use of moderate positive progression strategies mixed with a limited martingale negative progression. The easy to follow charts demonstrate to the reader that these progressions could be used to end short sessions of 100 decisions in the black almost every time.
The writer is an engineer, and his short-efficient prose make even the most complex principles of statistical theory accessible to the non-math oriented player. Don't be fooled by the tables and math though, because this is a very practical text. The author invites the reader to pick the progression that fits his or her temperament for short term swings, and provides the player a very likely chance to leave the table within a 1-2 hours with a decent gain.
On the other hand, Koetsch's science background contributes to the strength of the book in another way too. His detailed explanation of the experiment, and the circumstances of the program used inspires confidence in the reliability of the results, as well as his personal integrity: a welcome departure from many popular authors on gambling. I would not be surprised if his work spawns new interest from the MIT set in betting strategies as a potential success tool in low vig games such as craps, blackjack, and baccarat. Useless book

As a programmer, I also interesting in different betting system. When I first look at the title of the book, I feel lucky enough that I finally find a correct book to conquest the casino, as a programmer, we can program a betting system to see is working or not.

After I finish reading, I feel very disappointing about this book, there are no any systems in this book can win money in the long run, and all the analyse information in this book can be done in one day!

The author suggest "QUIT" when you ahead the casino. Yes, in 86% of the time, it works, but there are still 12% remaining that never get ahead the casino, once you together all the short section into a long section, you can find you still lose your money by the odd and the "law of large number".

Don't waste your money, try the other authors like Fred Renzey, Frand Scoblete, Peter Griffith, Stanford Wong and Ken Fuchs.

A revealing statistical anaysis

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it provides a revealing statistical analysis of several popular betting strategies. I have not seen this type of statistical analysis elsewhere. Koetsch has written computer programs to run the numbers with millions of trials to give statistically significant results. The results are clearly interpreted and explained in the book. Tables are also included for those of us that prefer a glance at the numerical results. If you are interested in an analysis of the best betting strategy to use based on statistical evidence, then I heartily recommend this well-written book!

About the Author

Karen Nunez-Tesheira is a family law expert who has researched extensively into family law across the Commonwealth Caribbean. From 2010 to 2014, she was a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Cave Hill Campus, University of the West Indies, having previously taught at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. Between 2007 and 2010, she served as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Finance in the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
