Autobiography of Red : A Novel in Verse, by Anne Carson

In her first novel in verse, Anne Carson bridges the gap between classicism and the modern, poetry and prose, with a volcanic journey into the soul of a winged red monster named Geryon.

There is a strong mixture of whimsy and sadness in Geryon's story. He is tormented as a boy by his brother, escapes to a parallel world of photography, and falls in love with Herakles--a golden young man who leaves Geryon at the peak of infatuation. Geryon retreats ever further into the world created by his camera, until that glass house is suddenly and irrevocably shattered by Herakles' return. Running throughout is Geryon's fascination with his wings, the color red, and the fantastic accident of who he is.

Autobiography of Red is a deceptively simple narrative layered with currents of meaning, emotion, and the truth about what it's like to be red. It is a powerful and unsettling story that moves, disturbs, and delights.

Amazon.com Review
Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red is a novel in verse, the author's first. A classicist by profession as well as a poet, Carson has drawn on antiquity for her cast, updating the myth of Geryon and Herakles. In the original version, of course, Herakles killed the red-skinned, winged Geryon. In Carson's very contemporary retelling, he merely inspires, but does not return, the monster's passion. By choosing Geryon as her central character, Carson can bring up the questions of existence as if they hadn't been asked before. After all, the monster's instincts have not been numbed by civilization. Fires twist through him. We feel the pain of learning the most elementary things, and then the volcanic intensity that comes with that more advanced thing, love. Yet Carson doesn't so much tell the story of Geryon's love as mediate his very being through semiological surfaces: cafes, video stores, lipstick, a library where he shelves government documents with a "forlorn austerity, / tall and hushed in their ranges as veterans of a forgotten war." Carson seldom satisfies herself with an image of the world. Instead she atomizes the world, leaving it broken down, refracted, and glinting. At times her verbal pyrotechnics manage to render pure energy: A little button at the end of each range activated the fluorescent track above it.
A yellowing 5 x 7 index card
Scotch-taped below each button said EXTINGUISH LIGHT WHEN NOT IN USE.
Geryon went flickering
through the ranges like a bit of mercury flipping the switches on and off.
The librarians thought him
a talented boy with a shadow side.
No novelist could have gotten away with that last line. Yet it's very much to the point: Carson's Geryon is, among other things, a camera freak who doesn't understand that an observer must inevitably alter the nature of the thing observed. Here is Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, cheek-by-jowl with the ancients! And indeed, Carson's achievement is to interweave the archaic and the modern so seamlessly that by the time we finish reading Autobiography of Red, the entire landscape looks inside out. --Mark Rudman

From Library Journal
Is it poetry? Is it a novel in verse? A fable? A myth? However you define Carson's distinctive and wildly inventive new work, it is riveting reading. At the center of the narrative is a winged red monster named Geryon; throughout, we see him struggling with his family, falling for the indifferent Herakles, and discovering photography as a means of comfort and escape. Wistful yet whimsical, offhand yet intense, funky yet erudite (Carson, a classics professor at McGill, grounds this work in ancient Greek myth), this is a reading experience like no other.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The title says autobiography; the subtitle, novel; and an inner title page reads "A Romance." Go with the last, for Carson recasts the Greek legend of Geryon, the red, winged monster that Herakles killed during his tenth labor. Names, wings, and some mythical details remain, but the setting is contemporary. Geryon, 14, meets Herakles, 16, and it's love at first sight. Life separates them, but they meet again when Geryon, now 22, literally runs into Herakles in Buenos Aires. Herakles and a colleague (and lover), scouting volcanoes for a film, whisk Geryon to the Andes, where his wings may cause him to be taken for an immortal. There the story breaks off. The start of another fantasy trilogy? Hardly, for although we know the story's end, it is not in the source, an ancient poem that now exists only in fragments. Instead, Carson interviews the poet, Stesichoros (circa 630^-555 B.C.), about his vision (he may have been blinded by Helen of Troy). Narratively, philosophically, humorously, a dazzling performance. Oh, yes: it's a poem. Ray Olson

What will you see when you allow yourself to disappear into the folds of the Autobiography of Red? What will you remember?
By Elisha Hawk
It must be a question of perspective. For me, it's as if I am standing outside a window looking in, and as I read, it is from the perspective of a mother of sons. Certain pieces linger -- Geryon's observation of stones at the beginning of the story- Carson has a unique ability to capture through mere glimpses the honesty and beauty of a child's understanding of his relationship to the world around him, trust in his brother because that's how the world should work in the mind of a 5 year old child; Geryon and his mother enjoying their Tuesday night routine- Geryon's mother's appreciation and validation of his sculpture autobiography; and perhaps what still pulls at my heart is what Carson was able to convey in the baby-sitting chapter- Geryon's retreat when his mother leaves and his springing to life with her return.

As I read the novel, I had to force myself not to judge, but to observe; it was easier the second time through. Still, my heart aches for Geryon, and his vulnerability. Carson beautifully captures Geryon's plight "outside and inside." My chest still tightens as I recall Geryon's struggle as he is left to fend for himself, first by his brother's apathy, then by his brother's violence, the cruelty of love lost, and finally the cost of his freedom.

"Who can a monster blame for being red?"

My heart aches for Geryon as he searches for meaning and an understanding of the distance between himself and the ones he loves, and his place in time and space.

Alice Munro captured the sentiment best: "this book is amazing -- I haven't discovered any writing in years so marvelously disturbing."

A Modern Classic
By Laura Stamps, Copywriter
Anne Carson is a master of experimental narrative poetry. And “Autobiography of Red” is her masterpiece. I’ve never read another novel in verse that floored me the way this one has. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve read it. Each reading delights my senses more than the first reading. Hard to believe but true! Her simple experimental structure is deceptively complex. Like all masterpieces, this one continues to unravel like the layers of an onion. It’s absolute perfection. That’s really all you can say about it. It. Is. Perfect.

Beautiful and touching.
By Randi
I have gotten so much out of this little book of fantastic poems... it has completely reinvented the way I think of poetry. Anne Carson speaks truth, but in such a way that it feels like the first time you heard those ideas.

About the Author
Shulim or Nikolai Aleksandrovich Notovich, known in the West as Nicolas Notovitch (1858-after 1916) was a Belarusian Jewish adventurer who claimed to be a Russian aristocrat and journalist. Notovitch is known for his 1887 book claiming that during his unknown years, Jesus left Galilee for India and studied with Buddhists and Hindus there before returning to Judea. Notovitch's claim was based on a document he said he had seen at the Hemis Monastery while he stayed there,

While the historical "accuracy" of this book is under some question, if accurate, it does provide a reasonable account of the missing years of Jesus' life. It also goes deeply into how and why the teachings of Jesus split so wildly from traditional Judaism, and provides a rational account of how so many Eastern ideas found their way into his teachings. I will be the first to admit that my beliefs on Jesus are not the standard theology taught in seminaries and churches throughout the world, but in my mind, it speaks to the influences that Jesus found to be Godly, and underpins why Christianity, and truly Christian beliefs, are the most humane and loving of the three religions worshipping the God of Abraham.

A 19TH CENTURY ACCOUNT OF JESUS' PURPORTED TRAVELS TO INDIA, NEPAL, ETC.
By Steven H Propp
Nicolas Notovitch (born 1858) was a Russian aristocrat, Cossack officer, and journalist. This book was first published in France in 1894. Notovitch wrote in the Foreword, "I undertook a series of extended journeys through the Orient... and finally, in 1887, made an excursion into India... In the course of one of my visits to a Bubbhist convent, I learned from the chief Lama that there existed very ancient memoirs, treating of the life of Christ ... I visited Himis, a large convent in the outskirts of [Leh], where I was informed by the Lama that the monastic libraries contained a few copies of the manuscript in question... An unfortunate acccident, whereby my leg was fractured, furnished me with a totally unexpected pretext to enter the monastery... and I took advantage of my short stay among these monks to obtain the privilege of seeing the manuscripts relating to Christ. With the aid of my interpreter, who translated from the Tibetan tongue, I carefully transcribed the verses as they were read by the Lama.

"Entertaining no doubt of the authenticity of this narrative, written with the utmost precision by Brahmin historians and Buddhists of India and Nepal, my intention was to publish the translation on my return to Europe... I addressed myself to several well-known ecclesiastics... the celebrated archbishop of Kiev, believed my discovery to be of great importance, but he earnestly tried to dissuade me from giving the memoirs publicly... I then called on... [Joseph Ernest Renan, author of The Life of Jesus]... At the end of the interview M. Renan proposed that I should intrust him with the memoirs in question, that he might make a report on them to the Academy... [Yet] I feared if I accepted this association I would only receive the bare honor of discovering the chronicles, while [Renan] would reap the glory of the publication and of the commentaries... Soon after the death of M. Renan... I therefore prepared my notes, and now publish them... Note: In the course of my travels I took many curious photographs, but when I came to examine the negatives on my return to India I was dismayed to find that they were absolutely destroyed."

The book begins with a lengthy essay by Notovitch, "A Journey to Thibet," that purports to describe his travels. This "Life of Saint Issa - The Best of the Sons of Men" is subdivided (in biblical fashion) into chapters and verses. He closes with an "Epitome," which explains that "The two manuscripts read to me by the lama ... were compiled from diverse copies written in the Thibetan tongue, translated from rolls... written in the Pail tongue... The chroniclers were Buddhists..."

The book says that "the time had come, which the Supreme Being, in his boundless clemency, had chosen to incarnate himself in a human being." (IV, 1) "The parents of this new-born child were poor" (IV, 6). "When Issa had attained the age of thirteen, when an Israelite should take a wife... It was then that Issa clandestinely left his father's house, went out of Jerusalem, and, in company with some merchants, traveled toward Sindh, that he might perfect himself in the divine word and study the laws of the great Buddhas." (IV, 10-13) Under "the white priests of Brahma," they "taught him to read and understand the Vedas, to heal by prayer, to teach and to explain the Holy Scripture, to cast out evil spirits from the body of man..." (V, 3-4). He journeyed to Nepal, and "applied himself to the study of the sacred rolls... Six years later, Issa, whom the Buddha had chosen to spread his holy word, could perfectly explain the sacred rolls" (VI, 2-5). He journeyed to Persia, where "the priests were terrified and forbade the inhabitants to listen to him." (VIII, 1)

Finally, Issa "was twenty-nine years of age when he arrived in the land of Israel." (IX, 1) "But the rulers of the cities feared him..." (X, 1-3). "Saint Issa thus taught the people of Israel for three years in every city, in every village, on the roadways, and in the fields, and all that he had predicted had come to pass" (XIII, 1). "The Governor became violently enraged and ordered the death of Issa" (XIII, 23). "At sunset, the agony of Issa came to an end... the soul of this just man detached itself from his body to become part of the Divinity." (XIV, 3) After Pilate had given Issa's body to his relations for burial, "Three days later the governor sent his soldiers to take up the body of Issa and bury it elsewhere... the sepulcher was found open and empty by the multitude; and the rumor immediately spread that the Supreme Judge had sent his angels to take away the mortal remains of the saint..." (XIV, 3-7).

The operative counsel is always "Caveat Emptor" when dealing with such speculative accounts; the book is declared fraudulent (including by Notovitch's own confession) in books such as The Issa Tale That Will Not Die: Nicholas Notovitch and His Fraudulent Gospel, Indology, Indomania, and Orientalism, and New Testament Apocrypha: Gospels and Related Writings, Vol. 1.

Other "Jesus in India" books include The Jesus Mystery, The Lost Years of Jesus, Jesus Lived in India: His Unknown Life Before and After Crucifixion, as well as the movie, The Lost Years of Jesus.

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship, by Natalie Lue

Most people if asked, would deny that they'd ever had a fantasy relationship as they are associated with pretending to be with someone or in something that's non-existent, however, it's time for you to change what you think you know.

In this modern age of texts, email, Facebook, online dating, and casual relationships, it's never been so easy to find yourself in a crumb filled fantasy relationship. An increasing number of people are satisfied with sprinklings of attention and interaction which they use to give themselves the illusion of being loved, cared for and in control because they get to avoid commitment, intimacy, and 'full-on' rejection.

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship is for every woman who's been caught short by their overactive imagination and their great expectations.

Struggled to get over a relationship that didn't truly exist?

Don't understand how you wound up spending years with someone you hardly see?

Keep letting your assumptions and projections run away with you?

It's time to come back down to earth and face reality so you can take action in your present, face your real future, and get happy.

Acting as a companion guide to Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, the no holds barred 'bible' for understanding excuse filled, commitment dodging, unavailable men and the women that they fall back on for an ego stroke, shag, and a shoulder to lean on, I wanted to introduce a new role due to the sheer number of emails and comments I receive from women who actually believe that the crumbs that they're receiving, particularly via cheap talk, grand promises, texts, email and Facebook are a relationship or 'love'.

You'll know you need to read this if:

You're an Escapist, dissatisfied with your current relationship, mentally checking out, complaining about your expectations not being met, and even starting an affair with someone else.

You're a Crusher, 'loving' and admiring someone from a distance that puts you in that unreciprocated feelings setting.

You're a Virtual, spending too much time surfing dating sites, relying on the written word and getting high off the buzz of a text or email coming through.

You're a Tabber, angry, hurt and feeling rejected because your relationship is over so regaining a sense of control by devoting your time and energy to tracking your ex via social networking and poking around in his life.

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship explains how fantasy relationships work, why they're so attractive, the types of fantasy relationship and Mr Unavailable that you're likely to be involved with, and provides practical tips and tools for breaking the habit and tackling issues such as rejection avoidance, and fear of abandonment, criticism and conflict. Delivered with a my no-fluff dose of reality and plenty of humour, I want to empower you to let go of the illusions so that you can be available for an available relationship in the real world.

Helped me so much!
By Amazon Customer
I stumbled on this book at just the right time. I've been living in my mind (constant daydreaming, fantasing, etc.) since a traumatic event in my childhood. I didn't realize, that as the years went by, it was becoming more frequent and negatively effecting my real life. When relationships ended, to avoid the pain, i kept the relationships going in my head. It's supposed to be a pleasant escape but in REALITY i was letting this fantasy eat away at me. Mrs. Lue helped me see that i have been taking a few good qualities about someone and then letting my fantasy make them into this perfect person. When this "perfect" person rejects me i of course feel worthless. Truth is in reality these people i pine for aren't even worth my affection. Natalie Lue is teaching me how to WAKE UP and see, think and act realistically when it comes to love and loving myself. I recommend this book to everyone. Maybe most people don't dream as much as i do but thanks to Disney and romantic films, i think most of us have a false sense of reality when it comes to love.

For Anyone With an Online Romance
By J. Robbins
After a couple of abusive relationships, I now have a better understanding of the pitfalls I stumble into. I found this book at just the right time. I was looking for a stable relationship with someone who could love me, help me feel safe and happy. I thought I found that in a person I met through an online game. We texted, emailed and even talked on the phone. After a medical diagnosis, he just disappeared. It broke my heart because I thought we were great friends and now he wouldn't answer my calls, return texts or emails. I didn't understand why he would disappear when I needed a friend the most. With the help of this book, I realize he wasn't the person I was hoping he was. I realize that I can make myself happy with someone that I can meet and someone that is willing to live with me in reality instead of all the "some day's" or "when's". Although it is difficult, with the help and advice in this book, I'm moving on. I know that by the time I feel better physically that I will be much stronger emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

If you find yourself "crushing" on an unavailable person, co-worker or you think you've met the perfect guy online, find yourself selling yourself short while you let someone else use your time to decide what you should do ... this book is for you. It won't be an automatic fix and will require some change inside yourself, after all ... if we aren't' willing to change, we will fall into the same traps and pitfalls.

I know some have commented on the poor spelling and grammar, but if you need the help enough it shouldn't be a bother. I also enjoy well written grammar with correct spelling, but I think fixing me is far more important.

Very original!!

Just for a little background info on me, I have a BA in English as well as psychology. I worked as a children's library assistant for my first four years out of college. I remember enjoying some of Cooney's books when I was in middle school. I read this one as an adult, and really enjoyed it. The plot was startingly orignal, in my opinion. I really felt for Mary Lee, and was really invested in what happened to her. Ok, Shakespeare it's not, but if you want to have a fast, thrilling read, try picking it up. If you're not into by chapter 3, just go ahead and put it away.

I think that this book is great. The main character is going through the realization that she was deceived by everyone she loves. All the while, cooney makes her misfortunes into a thriller. An autor who can twist a sory into whatever she feels like making it is truly an author. It's a really great book.

I'm still reading and learning CE. This is heavy on the chemistry (duh) but does have excellent information about DNA analysis using CE. Not for undergrads!

Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It's the only way to stay alive in a world of night--a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he's chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene's carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He's thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible--and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever--but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-The human race is almost extinct, replaced by vampirelike monsters. These so-called "people" have superstrength and speed, quickly perish in sunlight, and constantly crave human, or "heper," blood. There are only a few hepers left in captivity, or so they think. In reality, there is at least one living in plain sight: Gene, who conceals his identity by wearing fake fangs, washing constantly to hide his scent, adopting people mannerisms, and hiding his superior intelligence and inferior strength. He lives on the edge, knowing that the smallest mistake could cause him to be torn to pieces by his classmates. Then a Heper Hunt is announced. A few select people will be chosen by lottery to hunt the last hepers; whoever gets the most blood wins. Unlikely as it seems, Gene is chosen for the hunt and is pulled out of his relatively safe existence. The plot is fast paced and gripping, and readers will find themselves quickly turning pages as Gene learns secrets about the government, his fellow hunters, and the remaining hepers, all while struggling for survival. There are some minor inconsistencies. For example, people supposedly have a limited emotional range; however, this idea is belied by relationships and conversation that seem remarkably similar to human society, with popular cliques in the school and traditional family units. Still, strong writing distinguishes The Hunt from the legions of teen dystopian novels and with both a plot twist and a cliff-hanger at the end, readers will be left salivating for the next installment.-Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MAα(c) Copyright 2011. Now that's a vampire book!
By A. Looby
In an over-saturated genre, this is a breath of fresh air. The story is told from a male point of view, the vampires are the majority and they're not your "Edward-Carlisle-Damon-Stefan" type vampires. These are fierce creatures who will destroy a heper (human) in seconds. And they will not feel remorse.

There are truly gruesome scenes in the book, and there should be...vampires have been so domesticated and watered down in recent fiction. This is nothing like anything I've read in the genre. It actually makes fun of the others in a few places.

Gene is one of the last hepers on the earth, in a world dominated by vampires (people...hah!). He has been taught from birth how to blend in to their world, just to survive. He has a meticulous regimen in order to not be a meal every day at school. He's smart, but doesn't show it. He does whatever it takes to not draw attention. Except that Ashley June really has a crush on him.

He is chosen, seemingly at random, to participate in the first Heper Hunt in 10 years. And Ashley June is chosen too. They are taken for training and the hunt to the Institute where they see their first hepers (under a retractable dome) and meet some truly frightening other vampires. The action of the last half or so of the book makes it really hard to put down and stop reading.

The vampires are given interesting affectations (wrist scratching, neck snapping, drooling) that are unique and kind of funny if you try to picture it. The descriptions of meals and hunts are pretty graphic and could upset a younger reader who is sensitive. It totally sets itself up at the end for at least a sequel, if not a trilogy. I'll read those too.

This book is strange...
By Steph Sinclair
If there is anything good coming from the newer crops of dystopian fiction these days it's one thing: Evil, ravenous vampires are back. With books like The Immortal Rules and now The Hunt, YA thiller fans are sure to be pleased by this turn of events. I know I am. Unfortunately, The Hunt failed to WOW me on that factor alone.

In a nutshell, The Hunt is like an inverted Immortal Rules with a Hunger Games-esque twist. Instead of our young, male protagonist, Gene, being the only vampire among humans, he is one of the only humans living in the lion's den. In order to pull this off he must shave off all his body hair, clip his nails, polish his fake fangs, and bathe rigorously every single day. In addition to the intense grooming, he must suppress his basic human mannerisms such as laughing, sweating, singing, flinching, clearing his throat, ect. when in contact with "people." All of this is done because Gene lives in a world where he is considered a "heper," barely a step above a farm animal. In order to survive he has to hide who he truly is or risk being eaten. So when he is chosen for the Heper Hunt (think Hunger Games arena), you can only imagine his uneasiness. "Awkward" is an understatement.

The Hunt has a lot of potential because regardless of how I feel about it I can't deny that it's not creative. It features an entirely different spin on vampires that both intrigued me and weirded me out. It's also very readable and easily holds a reader's attention. I also felt myself enjoying Fukuda's prose as well, especially when Gene thought of his past memories of his family. That's the main reason why I ended up giving the book two stars instead of one. But like I said earlier, that alone won't win anyone points with me.

World Building:

*sigh* I feel like a broken record saying this, but if we are going to write a dystopian novel, please supply some background info. I don't need to know everything under the sun, but I'd at least like to know how your world ended up in its current cesspit state. Is that too much to ask? How did the vampires come to take over the world (literally)? Where did they come from? They managed to eat almost ALL the humans? Why did Gene even bother to try to blend in with vampire society? Why not run away? Have vampires taken over the entire world or did only the U.S. go to hell? Again. Is the rest of the world still partying like it's 1999? Why does Gene know so little about his world? Did the humans - excuse me, hepers - not pass any knowledge of their histories down to their children? So many question, with too few no answers.

Characters:

I think I hated almost all the characters in The Hunt, but Gene? He takes the number one spot on this here list. My biggest issue of the book resides with him because he was an idiot. A very selfish idiot. At the Heper Institute (where the hunters stayed and "trained" for the Heper Hunt) he begins to go thirsty since vampires don't need water, but there was a lake right in front of him the entire time. He talks about it and never thinks to go drink from it when the vampires are sleeping during the day. *facepalm* The plot twist - if you can even call it that - was so easy to guess, but guess who was incredibly shocked? Ding, ding, ding! Gene. And no, this was not a case in dramatic irony because everything that was revealed to the reader, Gene already knew. Hell, he's the one who narrates the story!

But that's not even the half of that. I could deal with a slow main character, but what I couldn't deal with was his "I'm better than these dirty hepers!" attitude. When Gene first arrives to the Heper institute and finds out the heper can talk, read, write, comprehend things, he is blown away. Shocked! This does not compute. I just wanted to yell at him, "YOU ARE A HEPER! If you can bloody do it, uh duh, so can they, genius." But it gets worse. Gene knows the hepers will be hunted, but they don't. Does he tell them? Attempt to help his people? NO. He just goes on business as usual, thinking that once the hepers are sent out to their deaths he can sneak away. That made me so angry. These are your people - perhaps the last humans alive - and you are going to sit and let them be eaten without doing anything about it? No, instead, you drink their water, eat their food and work their deaths into your escape plan. Cast him out of the human race. He is not one of us.

I mean, what did he expect he would do after the Heper Hunt? Go on living in his fake life where he could die at any moment? Who would want that kind of life? That makes not sense. If the world happens to end with vampires devouring humans and I'm left with an idiot like Gene, I'm tripping him as I run from the vamps. And don't get me started on Ashley June. She was just as bad as Gene and can die in a fire for all I care.

Believability:

The Hunt reminds me a lot of another book I've read called Glimmerglass. Not because they are similar in plot or anything, but because the reader must abandon a certain amount of logic and "just go with it." If anyone is familiar with me, they will know that it takes a lot for a book to convince me to "just go with it."

A list of things Fukuda expected me to buy:

-Vampires only eat bloody meat and can't stomach other foods except for ice cream. Wait, what?

-Gene never got sick from eating raw, bloody meat.

-Gene has learned to suppress basic human instincts like smiling, laughing, coughing, squinting, flinching? How the hell is that possible? So what happens when Gene gets sick? He stays home? And what would be his excuse for not being in school? The vampires don't appear to fall ill in this world.

-Sex by armpits? I'm sorry, that one, while creative, was a little too hard to swallow. Or were they making out?

"Before she could regain her footing, I shoved my elbow into the socket of her armpit. The way I had read about in books, seen in movies. I had her. Her body tensed in anticipation as my elbow locked into her armpit. And just like that, her body lost all tension and softened. I swiveled my elbow in long, luxurious circles, and her body moved in rhythm. Salivary wetness slivered between and around her snarling teeth. I concentrated hard after that, keeping up with appearances, making sure that the snarls came out in the right fevered pitch, that my body oscillated with enough passion and frenzy."

-Vampires couldn't tell Gene was a heper just because he shaved all his body hair off. Really? He still had hair on his head. Does that somehow smell different than facial, leg and arm hair? If they could smell the hepers in the dome even when they weren't sweaty, then they should have been able to always smell Gene in school.

The Ending:

It left me dangling of the edge of a cliff with three words.
*tries to repress a very human sigh* *doesn't work* *LE SIGH*
I'm sure there are a lot of people who will love The Hunt. It's different, interesting, creative and action packed. And while it didn't really work out for me here, I'm tempted to check out book two to see where the story goes. But as I say in the rest of my two star reviews, the next book can hang out on my "You're on Probation" shelf.

Few issues but couldn't put down
By Brandi Leigh Kosiner
Well, this is def an interesting take on vampires, elbow sex, wrist scratching and all. It is so creepy the way the remaining humans (hepers) are treated it gave me goosebumps. There were a few issues I had with the plot (how are vamps made in this world if a bite kills hepers/humans) but they may be resolved in the next book. Issues aside, I couldn't put this book down.
Gene, the main character is a human pretending to be a vampire. I don't see how he could pull it off-no facial hair, no expressions, no smell, no laughing, being able to see perfectly at night, etc. but it did make for some edge of your seat situations.
There is some very unexpected romance, but it just added to the appeal and mystery of what will happen next, and how they will get there.
I enjoyed being in Gene's head, he had a voice that pulled me in, and it was refreshing to read from a male point of view.
This is fully violent, totally consuming, and there are plenty of twists and lots of action that kept me glued from start to surprising finish.

a check on your imagination
By W Boudville
If you are pondering some kind of business venture in the telecom space, then Zuidweg's book could be useful. He discusses currently existing value added services. Many of which are offered by companies who are independent of the phone network providers. The book shows at the architectural level how these services are implemented. You can see the types of interactions between the end user who has a phone and the network and service providers.

A lot of the text concerns cellphones. Especially in the context of the mobility of the user. Many services now exist that depend on or take advantage of the user's location. The most direct, of course, hooks off knowing this location. The two main ways of finding this are via the cell network or by using a satellite system like GPS (or Galileo when that gets deployed). Some services only need an approximate location, like the cell that the user is in. These services are the easiest to implement, because no extra hardware or software is needed at the network provider, since it always knows the user's cell.

As the author points out, the range of services for cellphones is really limited only by the reader's imagination. The merit of the book is that it offers an education into what can be plausibly offered, as a check on that imagination.

There is one distressing little peccadillo. In the chapter on electronic commerce, Zuidweg mentions that paper money has "only been in use since the second half of the nineteenth century". Ahem. The Chinese were using paper money for over a millennium. While the British were doing so since at least the 17th century.

Not Romance, Fantasy
By Glee
This was a horrible horrible book. I could not get over the betrayal and the writer really does not adequately IMHO address the issue. I don't understand how the hero could expect girl to forgive him, much less take him back. The only reason the girl would take him back after he slept w/ her best friend, dump her at the alter and make her lose her baby would be if she had no self-esteem of her own. I can understand (though far fetched) her staying friends with this man but to take him back was just too hard to swallow. I would never, even if it was free, recommend this book. It was frustrating and I just wanted everyone in the book to just die. I hated everyone, even the kid!!! Seriously, it was that bad.

p.s. the sex scenes sucked too

DREARY AND DEPRESSING
By Reader
SPOILERS AHEAD......Basically this is the story of Troy who nine years prior cheated on his fiance Bree with her best friend Meg. When Meg turns out to be pregnant, he elopes with her and they marry. He only tells Bree after, and then only by phone. By sheer coincidence Bree was going to tell Troy she was pregnant herself. Instead she left town, but lost the baby at three months pregnant.

Present day and Bree has returned home for her sisters wedding. Of course she runs into Troy. Who had lost Meg in a road traffic accident fours years before. But he berates Bree for not attending the funeral. After all both he and Meg had apologised.
Troy never knew about Bree's pregnancy or miscarriage, she never told him.

What a shambolic mess this story is. The reader is never shown anything that happened in the past. All we get are small remembered snippets of conversations. The main story that is set in the present is weak, very little happens. The characters are shallow and self absorbed. I found it very difficult to relate to them in any way. Nothing happens except Troy constantly blames Bree for leaving town, and he can't understand why Bree who was madly in love with him wouldn't want to hang round and watch him play happy ever after with her best friend. As for Bree she should have told him she was pregnant. It might have made this a more interesting tale. And just to top it all off, Bree's father tells her that when Meg got pregnant he was the one who told Troy to marry her. But then as her father was a cheater himself what else can you expect. With family like that who needs enemies.
If I could have given this no stars I would have. First and last read for me by this author. Don't waste your money.

Always a Bridesmaid
By mnix
It's been nine years since Breanna Parker has been home, but her sister's wedding leaves her no choice but to return to the place where her heart was broken. Troy Youngwolf has never stopped loving Breanna, but a youthful drunken mistake forced him to marry her best friend. Something that Breanna has never forgiven. But he's a widower now with a daughter and he's determined that Breanna give him another chance. Breanna can't wait for the wedding to be over so that she can get out of town as quickly as possible and away from Troy. Although she still has feelings for Troy, she can't get over his betrayal and no matter what he does or how he tries to explain, she simply wants to leave. Preferably before he breaks her heart again.

I have to say, I usually really, really enjoy Elaine Hopper. As soon as this came across for review I wanted it. However Always a Bridesmaid left me feeling more frustrated than happy. I could have easily forgiven Troy his mistake but his late wife was such a cardboard character and the reasons beyond "he was drunk" were never really provided. So I never really felt that the book delivered the character depth that I needed to get past the betrayal and see him as hero material. Especially considering the way he just up and married without giving Breanna any warning. And without that depth I was frustrated by the constant barrage of characters who were on to Breanna to just forgive as if she was somehow in the wrong. Ms. Hopper still can put together a compelling storyline, but Always a Bridesmaid just missed the mark for me.
