Are there better books than this?
By Jon
This book is okay. It has a lot of important information in it, and good examples, but they are pretty well hidden among the unnecessary gibber. It's a good book, however I didn't really use it much, other than doing problems and the example problems.

Chapter 2 Review
By A Customer
Chapter 2 does a good job of describing the fundamentals of atomic bonding. The chapter starts out by reviewing the basic structure of the atom being the nucleus and the electrons. The nucleus is the center of the atom that is made up of protons and neutrons while the electrons are contained in the surrounding "shells" or orbitals. Throughout the beginning they explain the differences between the two types of bonding that can occur between atoms, the preliminary and the secondary bonding. They include the ionic, covalent, metallic, and the Van der Waals bonds. There are a few ideas that are mentioned for a reminder such as the mass of the proton and neutron, electron and Avagadro's number, which represents the number of protons necessary to provide a mass of 1 gram. There is an explanation of the orbital system and hybridization and a brief description of the different bonds mentioned in the preliminary and secondary bonding. Not only does the author describe the basics of the bond it does a good job of determining the origin of the bond, such as the ionic bond being the result of the Coulombic attraction. As a result of the easily understood explanations, they do supply brief definitions of the bond length, repulsive force, bonding force and bonding energy. Another topic that is touched on is the idea of the coordination number (CN) which depends on the ion properties. Following the CN, a definition of the different properties of the bonds and electrons and bond angles is thoroughly explained. Another thorough explanation is provided for the "Van der Waals" bonding, which is the attraction of opposite charges while there is no actual electron exchange. There are two types being permanent and temporary. I would recommend this book for a thorough explanation of the atomic structure.

A decent book, Ch6 for example
By A Customer
Chapter 6 covers the topic of Mechanical Behavior in 6 sub-sections. These sections include the stress versus strain relationship (a.k.a. Young's Modulus), elastic and plastic deformation, hardness, creep and stress relaxation, and viscoelastic deformation.
Section one discusses Young's Modulus in relation to metals, ceramics and glasses, and polymers. In this sub-section, engineering stress/strain and the differences between elastic/plastic deformations are discussed, as well as yield strength and tensile strength. This section includes some nice reference tables, and describes the stress/strain curve in great detail.
Sections two and three discuss elastic and plastic deformations. In the latter section, the slip plane for crystalline solids is well covered with some interesting illustrations.
Section four discusses hardness tests, in particular, Rockwell hardness and Brinell hardness numbers.
Creep and stress relaxation are discussed in section five, and covers the dislocation climb in plastic deformation among other topics. I feel that a better explanation regarding the preexponential constant is needed in this section.
The last section deals with viscoelastic deformation, and discusses various topics such as the glass transition temperature, viscous deformation, and softening temperatures. Also of interest is the subject of tempered glass, which is discussed in some detail.
This chapter does well in describing the general terminology and includes several equations with a practical application through example problems. In my opinion, though, this chapter doesn't cover enough information to answer some of the end of chapter problems, but a little on-line research should yield the required information.

Stoicism and the Art of Happiness (Teach Yourself: Philosophy & Religion), by Donald Robertson

The stoics lived a long time ago, but they had some startling insights into the human condition - insights which endure to this day. The philosophical tradition, founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in 301 BC, endured as an active movement for almost 500 years, and contributions from dazzling minds such as Cicero, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius helped create a body of thought with an extraordinary goal - to provide a rational, healthy way of living in harmony with the nature of the universe and in respect of our relationships with each other.

In many ways a precursor to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Stoicism provides an armamentarium of strategies and techniques for developing psychological resilience, while celebrating all in life which is beautiful and important. By learning what stoicism is, you can revolutionise your life and learn how to seize the day, live happily and be a better person.

This simple, empowering book shows how to use this ancient wisdom to make practical, positive changes to your life. Using thought-provoking case studies, highlighting key ideas and things to remember and providing tools for self-assessment, it demonstrates that Stoicism is a proven, profound pathway to happiness.

Too academic for my taste
By Camber
This is the third book I’ve read on stoicism, and overall I don’t like it as much as the others. I expected a straightforward practical emphasis because the author is a psychotherapist, the title refers to ‘the art of happiness’, there’s a blurb on the cover saying ‘ancient tips for modern challenges’, and the book is part of a ‘Teach Yourself’ series. What I found instead is that the book has an academic feel, with a lot of details related to terminology and somewhat esoteric specifics of what various ancient stoics said. And making matters worse, the book is tediously repetitive. Basically, you have to do quite a bit of filtering and reflecting to extract the practical points from the book.

I made such an effort, and my main conclusion is that we’re our own worst enemies when it comes to happiness, because we tend to naturally interpret our lives and circumstances in ways that lead to more negative emotions than necessary. The remedy is to become masters of our minds, using our abilities to reason and observe ourselves, so that we gradually train ourselves to habitually apply various psychological techniques which cause us to interpret things in ways that reduce negative emotions and foster positive emotions. We may never reach true mastery in this regard, but striving for it will still (hopefully) enable enough progress to make the effort worthwhile. And to help us make progress, we can use stoic sages as models for emulation (eg, ‘what would Epictetus do in this situation?’).

Here’s a summary of some key psychological techniques:

• Don’t be bothered by things over which you have little or no influence. That includes accepting that things sometimes won’t turn out as you intended or planned, so always be ready to adapt.

• Mentally prepare for tough circumstances, imagining handling them with calm composure. Such preparation will reduce fear of tough circumstances and lessen their effect when they happen. If necessary, also take a ‘time out’ to let emotions dampen. And taking it further, make tough circumstances a positive by treating them as learning opportunities.

• Be oriented largely towards the present, since the past is done and unchangeable, and the future is largely uncertain and out of our hands.

• Find a balance between being engaged in the world versus somewhat detached. Treat life as a festival or game, with the goal being to enjoy observing and participating for the short duration we’re here, but without being concerned too much about outcomes.

• Focus more on the inner development of your character rather than attaining or hanging on to external things which may be transient or beyond your control (material things, sensory pleasures, social status, health, even loved ones).

• Appreciate that things may happen according to a universal scheme which has underlying reason and meaning, but is beyond our finite understanding. Use this perspective to remind yourself that the things which trouble us are generally ‘small stuff’ in the overall scheme of things, which is mysterious but at least seems to entail an incomprehendably vast universe which has existed for billions of years.

Since most reviewers like this book, I don't want to deter people from reading it. But since the book didn't resonate with me, I think it's safe to say there will be others it won't resonate with either.

Why not Stoicism?
By Massimo Pigliucci
This was my first book on practical Stoicism, and it was certainly enjoyable. The author provides a balanced and captivating treatment of Stoic ancient philosophy and practice, updated for the 21st century. This is not just a handy introduction to Stoicism as a philosophy, it is a how-to manual that would have made Epictectus smile. Parts of it are a bit redundant, but even that is not really much of a defect, as certain concepts do need to be repeated in order to be highlighted and to sink in. Try out living like a Stoic, meditation, mindfulness and all. You might like it. It may even change your life.

Cicero called them, "The only real philosophers."
By Ricky
In my opinion, Robertson is superior to Hadot, Long, or any other writer on Stoicism because of his Psychotherapy background and his ability to reach the common man. I believe the true intention of Ancient philosophy was therapeutic and meant to be lived above all else. Not "The study of words" which it has become, to quote Seneca.

I would like to thank Mr. Robertson for his work and effort in bringing what I believe to be the noblest of all philosophies back onto bookshelves and back into people's minds.

Presents abridged versions of other reviews
By Charles D.
This book merely presents abridged versions of other reviews on nanotechnology. For example, the chapter on self-assembly misses most if not all if the initial discoveries and describes second and third generation reports that merely duplicate the concepts with new chemical building blocks. If one reads the reviews cited at the end of the chapters one will get a better view of the respective topics.

Who writes a book on a subject they don't understand?
By Erik streng
This is probably the worst book I've ever had to read. The authors either misses the point or misunderstands the point, systematically. Most of the examples in the early parts of the book are about the authors own research, on mass spectrometry (who cares about 5nm xenon clusters in nanotech?). It has nothing to do with tuning of functional properties in materials, witch nanotechnology is really all about. The solid state physics part is very thin, and the models used (exitons and jellium) are not especially good, and they are old. The chemistry part in this book is awful, no one will pass even basic chemistry with this degree of knowledge. The parts about characterisation is ok, but all the figures is copy-pasted from articles and is not really consistent. They don't look the same and the axises is reversed on every other figure.

The books definition is also strict to everything that is bigger than an atom, but smaller than 100nm is nanotechnology. This is used to justify i.e. why (the authors claim) that proteins and DNA is nanotechnology.

My conclusion is: If you need an introduction to nanotechnology find another book.

Not worth the money
By Amazon Customer
Perhaps this book would suffice as a surface reference, but it should not be used as the primary text for any course. The coverage is sparse at best, and it seems unlikely that anyone who didn't already understand the topics covered could do so with this book alone.

Perhaps it serves a purpose, but it cannot be used extensively.

Great for starting to design any type system..
By Steven L. Wiser
I was taught from edition one of this book back in the early 70's. Once the second edition came out I jumped at it and was not disappointed. The third edition came out in 1989 and I got it at once. Now I hope Professor Stoecker is still working on a fourth edition so that I can also get it.

This is the best book I have ever seen to help someone understand the in's and out's of design; any design, from system concept to system completion. I can't say enough about this book.

The optimization subjects are as simple to understand as came be made with excellent explanations.

Subjects covered are economics, equation fitting, modeling systems, system simulations, lagrange multiplers, search methods, dynamic programming, geometric programming, modeling of thermal properties, steady state simulation, dynamic behavior of thermal systems, calculus methods of optimization, probabilistic approaches to design and more.

Included in the appendices are a list of comprehensive problems and a computer program for generalized system simulation.

You can't go wrong with this one.

Excellent Text On Applied Optimization Methods
By Edward R. Knuckles
Excellent introductory text on the various mathematical methods used to optimize thermal systems. Example problems with solutions in each chapter quickly reinforce the concepts discussed. Answers to most of the problems are a beneficial aid in helping the student arrive at the correct solution rather than stumbling down a blind alley.
There could be more depth in the discussion of thermal systems and design concepts but overall the tradeoff between optimization methods and design concepts is good.

Slightly Dated Yet Fundamental Reference Text for Thermal System Engineers
By Ronald George
I'm an engineering professional who recently used this book for the study of the Design of Thermal Systems at Rochester Institute of Technology. It is written by William Stoecker, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published in 1989.

The first two chapters are on engineering design and selecting workable designs. A 3rd chapter introduces engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. The 4th chapter introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on, say data from a catalog. This is followed by a chapter on system modeling, i.e drawing the functional flow diagram indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from "black" box type unit components. Chapter 6 teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented in chapters 8-12. For project work, possibly the best part of the book is contained in the Appendix. It lists thought provoking system design challenges that involve the full breadth and scope of the tools presented in the book.

The 3rd edition of this book can be used within the context of a senior undergraduate or first year graduate curriculum. The reason I write that is because Stoecker makes only passing attempts to elaborate elementary concepts in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. So be warned since right off the bat, the 2nd chapter presents problems in the analysis of systems for optimization, for example a piping system for water conveyance or the design requirement to heat a swimming pool given various constraints. If it has been a while since you took thermo or heat transfer, you're well advised to use supplemental texts to fill the knowledge gap.

The ideal student of this text is one who is well prepared to face these challenging problems and has some degree of experience with them in actual working life. The merit of the book is in its well thought out problems that have been developed from Stoecker's teaching as well as research into real world design problems.

There is little possibility that a solutions manual for the text can be obtained so it is advised that the student develop his solutions with his own research and thinking. Socratic discussions with the lecturer to get further insights can always help. Which brings me to the fact that the ideal lecturer is one who has also worked in engineering plants with a number of these systems in actual practice - compressors, pumps, turbines, piping systems, evaporators, condensors etc.

The fundamentals of the math behind the optimization and system simulation may not have changed. But I've rated 4 stars for this book only because its design methodologies can seem a little dated for our times especially. Stocker hasn't really edited the book to present new concepts on concurrent engineering, design for environment, design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, decision trees etc. The meat of the book is in its analysis and optimization as the title says but I still think that the new era engineer will be served better if contemporary upstream methodologies used to generate concepts, arrive at workable solutions etc can be presented in the book. Which is why Adrian Bejan's "Thermal Design and Optimization" is also another excellent text on this subject. Stay tuned for my review of that book!!

All necessary corrections have been made, and the book retains the form which has long made it the most complete and valuable work of its kind. In this descriptive grammar the author offers a treatment of Greek syntax which is exceptionally rich as well subtle and varied.

The best for all pre-modern Greek except Hellenistic.
By S. Blackwelder
This is an excellent reference book! It has passed the test of heavy usage, and it has outlasted many academic fads.
Smyth does a thorough yet concise job on the known varieties of written Greek usage from the Homeric epics up to the beginning of the Hellenistic period .
Smyth does not cover Hellenistic (Koin) Greek as much, especially not for texts that have Semitic or Egyptian "flavors:" the Septuagint, New Testament and Egyptian Greek papyri. For real grammars on those, look up these authors: Wallace, Dana, Mantey, Robertson, Blass, Debrunner, Funk, Conybeare, Stock and Zerwick.
Some writers in the centuries between the reigns of Augustus and Constantine, and the Byzantines afterward, tried to "return" to Classical Attic usage in writing, with mixed results. When reading them, use both Smyth and a Hellenistic/Koin grammar together, carefully.

Warning about different editions
By Kirk Ormand
In this review I discuss two different editions of this book; Amazon will not allow me to separate my reviews by edition.

1. One of my students bought a paperback of this book (2010, Benediction Classics). There is a serious problem with it. This is a reprint of the _first_ edition of Smyth, copyright 1905. The _standard_ edition, and the one that every Greek commentary in the world will refer to, is a later edition (copyright 1920, revised by Gordon Messing in 1956). You might think that this would not matter, but it does: not only is the pagination different, but the reference numbers have all changed in the later, standard edition. So my poor student reads in his commentary that a concept is explained at Smyth paragraph 256, goes there and discovers that _his_ paragraph 256 has nothing to do with that grammatical problem.

My guess is that the publisher of this book found a copy of the first edition, realized that the copyright had run out, and slapped together a cheap reprint. It's not worth your $29. Buy the later edition from Harvard U. Press, and you'll be on the same page as the rest of the Greek-reading world.

2. On the NEW paperback by Martino Press (2014):

We seem to be in murky waters.
From what others have said, the Martino edition is an exact facsimile of the Harvard U. Press edition, first produced by H. W. Smyth, updated in 1956 by Gordon Messing. So in terms of quality, this book is what you want.

The question I have regards copyright. Harvard owns the copyright to Messing's updates of Smyth's 1920 edition - so how is it that Martino Press is publishing this book? My guess is that their lawyers have argued that Messing's updates were not significant enough to warrant new copyright, which puts the 1920 edition in the public domain. But in my HUP edition, Gordon Messing's Preface states: "Some changes have been made in the historical and comparative part of the work.... A very few changes, again bearing on historical linguistics, have been introduced in Part II.... In addition, lists of corrigenda have been supplied by several scholars, and /these have been silently inserted wherever possible/ (emphasis mine). Not one or two corrections, but "lists of corrigenda".

So this issue is simply this: when you buy the Martino Press edition, you are allowing this press to profit from the work that Gordon Messing did while under contract with Harvard University Press. Now, Harvard is a large institution with lots of money, and they don't depend on Smyth for their income. But for those of us who take the idea of intellectual property seriously - and I am one such - the Martino edition amounts to theft. It may not be illegal - I don't know the extent of Messing's "silent" corrections, and I'm not a lawyer. But it doesn't look ethical to me.

Amazon, needless to say, continues to do nothing to clarify the question of multiple editions, multiple copyrights, and multiple publishers. When you click to "look inside this book" you are shown images, not of the unethical Martino Press edition, but of the HUP edition - which holds a legal copyright on this work. I would suggest that that's the edition you should buy.

Need this book be praised?
By lfratan@acad.udallas.edu
Smyth is the only grammar for ancient Greek worth buying (besides the advanced treatments of specialized topics like Goodwin on the moods and tenses and Denniston on the particles). Unlike Latin, where the field of grammars is much wider, Smyth is the only English grammar of ancient Greek comprehensive enough to warrant any attention from Hellenists. Goodwin and Gulick's volume is too sparse in comparison (but note they cover prosody and Smyth does not) while Kaegi's is a step below theirs in depth. Ideally all intermediate level Greek students will begin to use this text as a reference grammar. Very reasonably priced for the wealth of information it contains. The book itself is also durable and will endure years of constant thumbing.
