Good book on SQLite

I have been using SQLite for about a year and thought I knew it reasonable well. After working through Using SQLite, I am a bit humbled. The author adds another layer of knowledge that is not present in the standard documentation. The book includes many addition nuggets of knowledge about the dialect of SQL used in SQLite and its C-interface. I learned a great deal from this book and have been revising my code since reading it.

This book is not an introduction to SQL or SQLite. There are plenty of book for the former, and plenty of web pages for the latter. I would suggest you read/purchase Using SQLite after you build the hello world of SQLite programs but before you use it in your product.

it's like a long man page

Very detailed explanation of various SQLite commands, but VERY FEW EXAMPLES. This is weird because usually OReilly books are rich with examples, but this is an exception. Since the net provides very few rich examples of SQLite usage, a cookbook-style SQLite volume would be a big help. This isn't it. Not worth the Kindle price.

Thorough Look At SQLite

SQLite is a great option for those that want to get a database up and running quickly, yet still with plenty of power. Great for prototyping, intranet applications, or any app that needs a small database, SQLite is the perfect solution for many, many problems that need to be solved. Instead of having to set up a server or get a DBA to go through the confusing steps of using Oracle or SQL Server, SQLite is eeeeeasy. 'Using SQLite' will show you how to set up your database, work with SELECT statements, designing your database, learning to interface with said database in C, working with built-in SQL functions, and a whole lot more.

If you need a database that will get you moving quickly, this is a fantastic option. The writing is solid and enjoyable, and you get this in a nice package.

About the Author
EDWARD PRICE is a former atheist from a Jewish background who became a Bah�’� more than forty years ago. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and Religious Studies and an M.S. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. As an instructional designer, he has developed training programs for numerous government and corporate clients. For many years, Edward has been investigating what God has taught humanity for the last 4,000 years, and the goals toward which God’s curriculum is striving. Edward lives in Illinois with his family and his Yorkie-poo, Spy.

For questions like, "Does everyone have the same God

I'm really impressed and blown away by The Divine Curriculum, Volume I - Divine Design because of the fresh, unique, insightful and friendly approach regarding the Abrahamic religions. This book gives the historical and religious context over the last 4,000 years, and the relationship each religion has to each other in a refreshing and uniquely harmonizing way.

It starts with the premise that: all of creation is a classroom - that the Creator/Owner/Director of the school is God, and that the Teachers in the school do not argue with each other. In fact, they affirm and praise each other. There is a concise and eloquent overview of the mission, teachings and stature of each of the Founders of the Abrahamic religions. The next sections are: Divine Curriculum, Divine Reality - One God, Divine Design, Divine Educators and the conclusion. Using the analogy of God educating humanity, with each Educator who has been sent, the author shares unusual perspectives - that humanity has been learning spiritually necessary concepts from God through the Divine Educators.

Age old, weighty topics require weighty and thorough explanations. For questions like, "Does everyone have the same God?" and "Would a just and loving God condemn everyone to Hell for not believing in _______ (fill in the blank)?" and "If Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets, how could a faithful Muslim accept Prophets who come after Him?" These and many other relevant questions are explored, and like every other aspect of this volume, the author unites rather than divides. Edward Price kindly and plainly demonstrates his view that indeed, Christians, Jews, Muslims and Baha'is have the same God, and that each Founder was a Divine Educator.

This book is timely in it's perspective about Islam in particular, and the current turmoil in the world today inflicted by extremists. The author sites passage after passage from the Qur'an, including the context, that prove jihadi extremists are completely twisting scripture to fit their objectives.

The Divine Curriculum is written at the depth of a scholar, but in a way that the average person can make perfect sense of the presentation. When it comes to spirituality and religion, I highly recommend The Divine Curriculum to anyone who sincerely questions.

Read this book and gain perspective!

In an age where religions seem more in conflict than in agreement, this book should be read by everyone. After reading this you will look at the news stories about wars, oppression, and terrorism, all in the name of one religion or another, and think, "What are we doing? We're all part of the same Divine Plan!" This book wonderfully allows you to take a step back and gain perspective on the grand sweep of religious history.
Edward Price deals with some pretty big subjects but in a very readable, relatable way. Two things stand out to me that really give the reader a framework for understanding: first the concept of the "Divine Curriculum", that God the Creator is also our Master Educator who has designed an ages-long educational process. We have been going to school since the very beginning, and His teachers are the founders of the world's great religions (he focuses on the Abrahamic religions in this book) and His text books are the scriptures they revealed. Second, he adeptly separates the "human side" of religion (the man-made laws, ceremonies, practices, etc.) from the "divine side" of each of the religions. What did the Prophet or Messenger or Manifestation ACTUALLY say and do, Not what theologians said. Not what his followers say or do in His Name. He takes each religion, each Teacher, each Scripture (Old Testament, New Testament, Holy Qu'ran, Baha'i Writings) on their own terms. Lovingly and respectfully. Then, he can discuss things like the nature of God, our relationship to Him, our purpose for being here, etc., and present passages from all those Scriptures that make things is so clear.
One other note: the chapter on Muhammad and Islam, where he goes into some history of how the current jihadists developed, then point by point shows how what they believe and how they act are directly opposed to the religion Muhammad actually taught is very clarifying. To me, that chapter alone is worth the price of the book!
As someone who has studied religions and religious history I still learned a lot. Big big recommend!

A text for school in the world

This is the most significant book on religion that I have ever read by an American author.

I say American because many of the books to which he refers are by other authors from elsewhere. I am 68 years old and I have read voraciously most of my life. I just wish I had had this book when I was young. It answers so many of the questions that I had as a youth. It's really nice to get a glimpse of why the world and the religions are the way they are. It's also nice to see some of the reasons for how so much dis-information has accumulated over the centuries and who is propagating it.

It's worth savoring. So many of the quotes caused me to simply stop and ponder them. Extremely edifying!

I would highly recommend it to every Jew, Christian, Moslem and Baha'i ... Buddhist, Hindu, and Zoroastrian, too.

Well-paced if antiquated

Like many of Michael Lewis' latter-day works, Liar's Poker is engaging, dissecting the birth of mortgage bonds and the dissolution of one of the 80s Wall Street's top earners. It's easy to catch the strokes of his later works in the descriptions of people and his wonkish simplification of the complexities of the financial markets.

Notwithstanding the novel's expert skewering of the Salomon Brothers' culture and the well-traced rise of what would one day become mortgage-backed securities, the greatest pleasure of the novel is the fall of the many Wall Street giants Lewis lauds that are now upon the dust heap of history. He calls out Lehman Brothers early on, giving us the chance to savor the irony that Salomon collapsed well before Lehman. The men that Lewis saw working as a junior employee at Salomon sowed the seeds of 2008 financial collapse, and with that firmly in our hindsight, Liar's Poker is a fantastic portrait of the very genesis of the rot that brought us low almost a decade ago.

My takeaways

Michael Lewis is very funny to go along with his insight into how the financial world works. Here are some major takeaways for me:

[1] Solomon Brothers showed excessive greed and always placed the firms interests above those of their customers and rich customers treat the bond [and stock] market like a casino. Middle class people who need a decent return to retire muddle along but the market rises and falls precipitously on the gambling mentality of the rich.

[2] Previous to 1980 bond markets were unregulated so when junk bonds were invented [and bond prices became volatile like stocks] it was not illegal to trade bonds on insider information. Traders will always be more nimble than government regulations and the system will always favor the dishonest few.

[3] At the end in his conclusions, he says that the principals at Solomon will remain "fat and happy". To me that is an oxymoron. They operate on the principal that money is everything. If it were true the US would be the happiest country in the world because it has the highest GNP. Fat people are unhealthy and being healthy and taking care of oneself is at least as important as being rich.

Also if a person is rich enough to buy five houses, he can only be in one place at a time...just like a poor person. If a person is impoverished, more money will make him happier. But after a person has enough money for all his needs, more money doesn't increase happiness. People who realize this can become truly happy.

I liked Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short”, so I decided to read his earlier book “Liars Poker”. “The Big Short” was especially interesting (dramatic, even) because it talks about the Great Recession (that is still so fresh in my mind). In comparison “Liars Poker” talks about Lewis’ early career in finance back in the early-to-mid 1980’s. So “Liars Poker” was less exciting than “The Big Short”, but it was more “broad brush” – and so more insightful about the basic workings of the Wall Street companies. This book destroys any myth that Wall Street is successful when they make their investor clients successful; Wall Street can be just as successful when dumping their losing investments by recommending those same “investments” to their ignorant, hapless clients. The book’s biggest lesson for the investor is “caveat emptor”. “Liars Poker” is humorous, eye-opening, disheartening, instructive – and entertaining.

I got this book as the kindle version d it was terrible to read in that format. Flipping through pages by finger on the iPad or by mouse swipe on a laptop was painful. I would end up over scrolling forwards or backwards. The text was small and the book was beyond dry. Very difficult read

This is a pretty thorough textbook. However, if you are not an ISM major or do not have a passion for ISM, this is an extremely dry book. Might have something to do with the actual subject matter, but I have read other ISM textbooks that provide a much more enjoyable reading experience.
