About the Author
Alan Williams, PhD, SE, FICE, C Eng, is a registered professional engineer and structural engineer in California, a Fellow and Life Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, and a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California. He obtained his bachelor of science degree and doctorate from the University of Leeds in England. Dr. Williams has extensive experience teaching and practicing structural engineering, including designing and constructing bridges, schools, and industrial and commercial structures. He has worked as a senior engineer with the California Department of Transportation and as a Principal for Structural Safety with the California Division of the State Architect. Dr. Williams has published several textbooks and papers on structural engineering design, structural analysis, seismic design, and reinforced and prestressed concrete design.

Introduction

PART 1: HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

This Structural Engineering Reference Manual is intended to help you prepare for the 16-hour Structural Engineering (SE) exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The NCEES SE exam will test your knowledge of structural principles by presenting problems that cover the design of an entire structure or portion of a structure. The exam is given in four modules—two concerning vertical forces and two concerning lateral forces. The eight chapters of this book are organized around the eight areas in which these forces are applied.

These eight areas include

• reinforced concrete design
• foundations and retaining structures
• prestressed concrete design
• structural steel design
• timber design
• reinforced masonry design
• lateral forces (wind and seismic)
• bridge design

Each chapter presents structural design principles that build on the ones before, so you should read the chapters in the order in which they are presented. The examples in each chapter should also be read in sequence. Taken together in this way, they constitute the solution to a complete design problem similar to that on the exam.

Your solutions to the SE exam problems must be based on the NCEES-adopted codes and design standards. Therefore, you should carefully review the appropriate sections of the exam-adopted design standards and codes that are presented, analyzed, and explained in each chapter of this book. Each of the examples in this
book focuses on one specific code principle and offer a clear interpretation of that principle.

One of my main go to books during studying AND the exam

I just took my exam 3 days ago so I wanted to write this review while it's still fresh in my mind. Overall, this book is extremely helpful and well worth the money. If you don't know how to begin in studying for the SE exam, this book will get you started on the right track. This was my main study guide for the exam and got priority seating on the table during the examination. One of the first things Alan Williams tells you in this book is that an effective study session should take about 300 hours! This is no joke! The exam covers so much information that I don't know how you could do a thorough study session with any less.

My main gripes with the book were related to the fact that there was no cold-formed steel review section and that the Bridge Section of the book was really skimpy. You could tell that this book really catered to building design. If you don't know the AASHTO code, this book will not suffice as a sole-source bridge study guide. It should have put more emphasis on live load distribution analysis. It also didn't even mention wind loads or stream load pressures on bridge piers, design or analysis of abutments or columns. Also, AASHTO has its own unique way of analyzing soil retaining structures which wasn't mentioned in this book. In actuality, the bridge section probably needed to be 3 times bigger than the book allotted for. Fortunately, I am a bridge engineer so I was familiar with all this stuff. I can only imagine what other people who don't know AASHTO were thinking.

Structural Engineering Reference Manual
Having used PPI's Civil Engineering Reference Manual extensively while studying for the PE-Civil, I bought the SERM for the PE-Structural I and II. I opened it once only when I started studying, and then realized it was not as thorough as I needed it to be. That, plus in some states this book is not allowed to be taken into the examination room (in Illinois where I took the SE I and II, for example, it is prohibited along with "any reference and solution manuals published by Professional Publications, Inc."!) so check your state's requirements first before getting too dependent on it.

Yet I don't regret buying the SERM because it can be used as a quick reference book at work; but as a study aid/reference book in preparation for and during the exams, it was not really helpful.

Excellent in many different ways. Excellent for SE review but also great for professional practice. Unlike many other study references before, the errors / errata is minimal. At least for what I've studied so far. It's great work!

This text was written to fill a very important educational niche in the broad spectrum of control systems knowledge. That niche lies between the hands-on electromechanical knowledge and skills needed by technicians and the highly abstract and theoretical knowledge required by scholars who research and develop new control strategies. This book focuses on the knowledge required by control systems practitioners to enable them to both understand and evaluate an existing control system and devise and design new control system applications.

The text presents classical and digital control systems with an emphasis on careful explanations of the concepts. Many examples illustrate key topics and the operations required to solve problems.

The text is an outgrowth of many years of teaching control systems to students in an engineering technology program. It is written for a two-semester course, nominally separated into analog and digital control. The difficulty with this approach is that much of digital control is a spinoff of analog concepts. Therefore, the analog material by itself is more extensive than the digital. In practice, we have found that some of the material on analog control must be delayed to the second course.

Although patterned after the course sequence expected for a particular educational program, this text can be adapted to other approaches. For example, Chapter 2 (Measurement) can be omitted by those who prefer to cover sensors and measurement in other courses. Likewise, if Laplace transforms are covered in an independent course, that section in Chapter 3 can be omitted or assigned as review. It would be important to include, however, the last section of Chapter 3, Analog Simulation.

The text emphasizes an understanding of control system concepts, but also requires the use of computers to implement practical solutions to problems. There are a number of control and mathematical software packages which are of great value in the study of control systems. Throughout the text; the use of these packages to facilitate solving problems is emphasized, and Mathcad or MATLAB is used to illustrate computer-based mathematical procedures. An attempt has been made to emphasize the use of computers as a tool to implement the mathematical and graphical operations required to solve a problem.

A Web page ( www.uh.edu/~techl3v/ContSysTech ) will be set up for this text as a means for communication between users and authors, and also for sharing ideas and techniques related to teaching control systems. A solutions manual (ISBN: 0-13-090661-1) is available. It contains examples of physical and simulation experiments that can be conducted to enhance learning.

I've had a bad breakup (along with other depressing events within the same timeframe) in the past. It's a difficult thing to go through and honestly, just reading a book might be hard for you to do. BUT...

Reading this book could also be the best thing for you to do, even if it's hard. It's under 100 pages so that's a plus for you too.

You might have to take it slow, but as long as you get it done and internalize what you read you'll be good. Oh, and don't forget to act on the advice!

Breakups can set you back in life so the sooner you recover the better...

Read this book and let Andrew guide you through the process of recovering fully from a breakup.

Useful and uplifting. Well written. Ferebee gets to the point. He is empathetic, motivational, and straight on providing a clear method for recovering and thriving after a break up. I highly recommend it to anyone going through a rough patch. I'm currently going through a divorce. This book has been great because it gives you a strategy. He asserts that your break up was for the best, and he'll tell you why. He'll bring you into a healthy mindset where you can be certain the best part of your life is yet to come. And once you are healed from the split, once you get back on your feet, you will want to read his first book: The Dating Playbook for Men.

Fascinating book!! I want to clarify for anyone confused by the name that this is written for adults, not children. The Chris Bledsoe abduction stories (there are more than one) are a highlight. The story about the CIA and Navy channeling an alien was another personal fav. Chapter 7 has a bunch of really interesting celebrity abduction stories too. Recommended to all.

"I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker," Marya Hornbacher writes. "I, as many young women do, honest-to-God believed that once I Just Lost a Few Pounds, suddenly I would be a New You, I would have Ken-doll men chasing my thin legs down with bouquets of flowers on the street, I would become rich and famous and glamorous and lose my freckles and become blond and five foot ten." Hornbacher describes in shocking detail her lifelong quest to starve herself to death, to force her short, athletic body to fade away. She remembers telling a friend, at age 4, that she was on a diet. Her bizarre tale includes not only the usual puking and starving, but also being confined to mental hospitals and growing fur (a phenomenon called lanugo, which nature imposes to keep a body from freezing to death during periods of famine).

YA-Eating disorders are frequently written about but rarely with such immediacy and candor. Hornbacher was only 23 years old when she wrote this book so there is no sense of her having distanced herself from the disease or its lingering effects on her. This, combined with her talent for writing, gives readers a real sense of the horror of anorexia and bulimia and their power to dominate an individual's life. The author was bulimic as a fourth grader and anorexic at age 15. She was hospitalized several times and institutionalized once. By 1993 she was attending college and working as a journalist. Her weight had dropped to 52 pounds and doctors in the emergency room gave her only a week to live. She left the hospital, decided she wanted to live, then walked back and signed herself in for treatment. This is not a quick or an easy read. Hornbacher talks about possible causes for the illnesses and describes feeling isolated, being in complete denial, and not wanting to change or fearing change, until she nearly died. Young people will connect with this compelling and authentic story.

Honest and Real

This is a great book on the devastation that is an eating disorder. As an eating disorder survivor myself (albeit one significantly less severe than Ms. Hornbacher's) it paints an accurate and moving account of what it's like to go through something that many don't understand. Hornbacher lays everything out in the open and offers a lot of the brutal, honest, and disturbing truths of having a constant battle with yourself surrounding one of the most basic human needs, eating. This by no means is a book for the faint of heart, but it's real. If you currently watching a loved one go through an eating disorder, this is a great book to get a brutal understanding of what they're going through. It's not easy to read, but it's the sad reality and hopefully you'll come out of it with a greater appreciation of their struggle.

I am a former bulimic/anorexic. Having said that, I am sure I am not alone in the reality that we who have had this disorder read many accounts of others with the disorder. This one is the least romanticized or glorified or even blame filled. Marya tells the story in all its gore and bitterness. There are no frills no one finishing this book would want to attempt to go down the slippers slope of screwing around with your diet or health. I had never read or been able to describe the "cold" you physically feel as an anorexic. Marya does it so eloquently it put me back to 89 pounds and constantly freezing, even in the winter. The description of the terror of your hair falling out. The description of the terror of little by little killing yourself and the madness of not being able to stop and almost feeling powerful in doing so. Anyone who seeks to see inside the mind of the disorder -or who has been through it and wants to know they weren't the only ones who did some crazy stuff, should read.

I have read this a few times through the years...

And it's an excellent book. I love her writing, she's ultra talented and real. I've read several eating disorder books. Many are teen based and has a lot of angry tones, and they were difficult for me to relate to. In this book, it's not just the rebellious mind but something more complicated... Someone finding herself, finding what is important in life, her growth as a person. I love the way she shows her struggles that began at an early life, her chaotic family and brings you through her journey to become well. One of my all time favorite books.
