About the Author

The Secret To Healing

I have titled my review "The Secret To Healing". Dr. Tien-Sheng Hsu,a family doctor and psychiatrist in Taiwan, writes from a background of dealing with cancer patients, but the material in this book could easily be applied to any healing process - mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual. Based on the Seth material (as channeled through Jane Roberts), the focus is on the human psyche, and how it affects the body. His wisdom, combined with his experience, has resulted in the creation of a unique program for cancer therapy and relapse prevention.

The cases presented in this book are individuals in Taiwan that are facing cancer. Perhaps I should not call them cases - they are more aptly termed the stories of patients that Dr. Tien-Sheng Hsu has worked with. They are not numbers, they are individuals. Part of their treatment is taking them back to life-changing moments, moments where the psychological seed for their current physical distress originated. This material corresponds readily with the same issues faced by patients in the western world.

The material is very well written and easy to follow, and has been translated from the original mandarin in very good form. Through the Seth materials, the position is presented that illness is a reflection of inner problems that reflect in issues with the bodies immune system.

For anyone who is facing a health crisis, or has a family member or friend who is facing a health crisis, this is a must read book. It is a starting point, not an end point. It will make the reader think in fresher, broader terms. Heal your psyche, heal your genes. Take responsibility for your life, and your good health will follow!

I know Dr Hsu for 3 years. Dr Hsu is well known in Taiwan and throughout Asia. He is a leader of New Age movement and specialize in Seth Material.

This is Dr Hsu's first book (he has written more than 10 books), and is currently the only one translated into English.

This book has changed many people's live and healed many cancer patient.

An Important New View of Cancer

This is a revolutionary book by any measure. Imagine a medical doctor emphatically suggesting that our natural state is a state of health, and that illness is simply a wake-up call to tell us that our spirit is missing something big in life. He suggests that Western medicine ignores a person's psychological state, and despite enormous investments in research we still see the numbers of cases of cancer increasing each year. He believes that the main underlying cause of cancer is blocked creative fire and hopelessness. This might sound a bit simplistic, until you learn that by treating the emotions of his patients, he is getting cures where medicine had given up.

He talks talk about the healing power of loving yourself and how that is very different from being selfish. Based on his deep study of the Seth material channeled by Jane Roberts, Dr. Hsu is a staunch proponent of the role of consciousness in gene mutations and the development of different cancers.

It would be a major step forward in the treatment of this devastating complex of diseases that is cancer if oncologists could be exposed to this type of thinking and look at what is going on in the mind and spirit of their patients, and not just in the biological processes of the physical body. Truly it is time for this kind of paradigm shift.

About the Author

Paul Krugman is a professor in the Department of Economics and in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University . Over the last 30 years, he has contributed to numerous academic journals as well as to the public discourse on economics and as an op-ed columnist for The New York Times . He is the author of over 20 bestselling books and has written more than 200 papers and articles for various professional journal volumes and newspapers. He is acclaimed in the field of economics for insights into international trade patterns that overturned long-held theories about the global economy. In 2008, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics and was recognized for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity.

Maurice Obstfeld is a Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for International and Development Economic Research (CIDER) at the University of California, Berkeley. He also serves as honorary advisor to the Bank of Japan's Institute of Monetary and Economic Studies. Among Professor Obstfeld's honors are the Carroll Round Keynote Lecture, Woodward Lecture, and Bernhard Harms Prize and Lecture in 2004. Marc Melitz is a Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He is an economist who specializes in international trade theory and has worked on the development of trade models that account for differences in productivity between firms. His research is focused on producer-level responses to globalization. �The Melitz model helps to explain variations in export and foreign direct investment patterns and is now widely used in the field of international trade and has become a cornerstone of trade theory. Melitz is also associate editor of the Journal of International Economics and Economic Journal, a foreign editor for the Review of Economic Studies, and is a research fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research and a faculty research fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Not What I've Come to Expect from Krugman

First off, even if you totally discount the rest of my review, buy the low price international version of this book. On the March 10, 2005 episode of the daily show Krugman elucidated his feelings quite clearly. "The real money is in textbooks. With other books, people need to decide whether to buy them or not. Students have to buy textbooks." Thanks Paul. I think I'm being charitable when I say that at $125 this book is a ripoff. It isn't even full color.

Anyway, on to the actual content of the book. I have to say that I was excited when I found out that my International economics course at Stanford was going to be using Paul Krugman's book. I've enjoyed his articles for the New York Times because they manage to cut right to the core of issues with an unusual amount of punch. Yet, time and time again I was disappointed with the frequently inpenatrable language and obtuse, unrealistic examples in this book. Unfortunately, the only part of Krugman's characteristic writing style that came through was a feeling of overwrought vitriol, which makes sense in an op-ed but has little place in a textbook. Furthermore, this book occupies a strange niche in the world of econ texts, it is not mathematically rigorous, nor is it well written. Usually we see one or the other but rarely both. Initially, I thought these observations were mine alone, but other students began openly voicing pointed criticisms of the book during class (and I am perhaps being too kind here in not repeating them). I've been in school nearly as long as I can remember and I have never seen such discontent with a text.

During the second half of the course even my econ prof became fed up and abandoned the book altogether. Given that, I find all of the positive reviews for this book rather astounding. My suspicion is that there might have been open rebellion amongst my classmates had not the professor decided to leave this text by the wayside. I also found that it is brimming with misplaced, one-sided arguments that come across as Krugman blatantly strawmanning arguments opposed to his own. One of many examples of this comes out of nowhere near the end of chapter 2. Krugman implies that anyone who doesn't believe in unmitigated free trade is intellectually irresponsible!?! This book pushes for unrestrained market fundamentalism throughout, primarily by misrepresenting any arguments that would effectively challenge it's simplistic and seemingly outdated dogma. This book, in particular, feeds into the same system of self serving scientism so prevalent in economics for the last 60 years.

Please don't mistake this review as the bile of a jilted student, I did quite well in the course. However, this is almost certainly the result of looking for alternative explanations of virtually every topic covered. The reason this book gets one star instead of two is because it lacks a lot of the modern learning tools prevalent in almost every other textbook. Things like quality questions, keywords, vocabulary and historical context all get short shrift in this this volume. If you're into learning about incomplete models that only represent a theoretical version of the world, this book is for you. Unfortunately, just like Krugman said on The Daily Show, if you are a student there is probably little chance that you have a choice on the matter. Buy the cheap international edition for 20 bucks. I would recommend that you use to the difference to buy William Easterly's Elusive Quest for Growth...and a beer.

A not-so-bad survey of international economics

Regarding Gerald Senarclens de Grancy's comments: The idea of Krugman as a Bush administration cheerleader is pretty funny. At first I thought this was a joke but then I realised it wasn't. Granted, the book doesn't mention the Tobin Tax, but there's only so much you can pack into a superficial survey text like this. Overall, I think the authors are pretty unbiased and mainstream. (Haven't used the web supplements, so can't comment on that).

Having seen this book evolve over several editions, I can honestly say that the current one represents a distinct improvement, with the new introductory chapter on the gravity model providing some much needed perspective at the start. However, it's not an ideal book to learn trade theory and open econonmy macro from. My favorite (although slightly more rigorous) is "The International Economy" by Kenen. And if you are only interested in trade theory, "International Trade, Theory and Evidence" by Markusen et. al. is superior.

A very good guide for an undergraduate course

I used several times the fifth edition of Krugman and Obstfeld's book to teach International Finance to undergraduates in economics, and I found it comprehensive, understandable and very didactic. True, the book does not follow a rigorous mathematical approach, even less a dynamic one, but I think that is not the authors' intention. On the contrary, they use simple equations, basic graphical analysis, empirical data illustrations and some economic history to show the main issues they want to. And I must say that they clearly succeed in explaining virtually every topic an undergraduate student should know about international economics.

There are several essential topics that should be part of the backbone of a course in international finance, and they are included in this book:

- the asset approach to exchange rates;
- the crucial role of expectations;
- the relationship between money, interest rates and the exchange rates in the short run;
- the long run relationship between prices and exchange rates;
- the internal and external equilibrium for small open economies;
- the interaction of fiscal and monetary policies in an international context;
- inflation bias and other policy formulation problems;
- fixed exchange rates and foreign intervention;
- A description of the evolution of the international monetary system;
- floating exchange rates; macroeconomic policy and international coordination;
- optimum currency areas;
- recent topics on the global capital markets; and
- growth, crisis and reform in developing countries.

In sum, the book by Krugman and Obstfeld is a pretty good undergrad textbook to learn for the first time the core of monetary issues in international economics.

Brad Abrams was a founding member of the Common Language Runtime and .NET Framework teams at Microsoft Corporation. He has been designing parts of the .NET Framework since 1998 and is currently Group Program Manager of the .NET Framework team. Brad started his framework design career building the Base Class Library (BCL) that ships as a core part of the .NET Framework. This book, Framework Design Guidelines, presents best practices for designing frameworks, which are reusable object-oriented libraries. The guidelines are applicable to frameworks ranging in size and in their scale of reuse:

• Large system frameworks, such as the .NET Framework, usually consisting of thousands of types and used by millions of developers.
• Medium-size reusable layers of large distributed applications or extensions to system frameworks, such as the Web Services Enhancements.
• Small components shared among several applications; for example, a grid control library.

It is worth noting that this book focuses on design issues that directly affect the programmability of a framework (publicly accessible APIs1). As a result, we generally do not cover much in terms of implementation details. Just like a user interface design book doesn’t cover the details of how to implement hit testing, this book does not describe how to implement a binary sort, for example. This scope allows us to provide a definitive guide for framework designers instead of being yet another book about programming.

These guidelines were created in the early days of .NET Framework development. They started as a small set of naming and design conventions but have been enhanced, scrutinized, and refined to a point where they are generally considered the canonical way to design frameworks at Microsoft. They carry the experience and cumulative wisdom of thousands of developer hours over three versions of the .NET Framework. We tried to avoid basing the text purely on some idealistic design philosophies, and we think its day-to-day use by development teams at Microsoft has made it an intensely pragmatic book.

The book contains many annotations that explain trade-offs, explain history, amplify, or provide critiquing views on the guidelines. These annotations are written by experienced framework designers, industry experts, and users. They are the stories from the trenches that add color and setting for many of the guidelines presented.

The book assumes basic familiarity with .NET Framework programming. A few guidelines assume familiarity with features introduced in version 3.5 of the Framework. If you are looking for a good introduction to Framework programming, there are some excellent suggestions in the Suggested Reading List at the end of the book.

Guideline Presentation

The guidelines are organized as simple recommendations using Do, Consider, Avoid, and Do not. Each guideline describes either a good or bad practice and all have a consistent presentation. Good practices have a check mark in front of them, and bad practices have an ex.

The wording of each guideline also indicates how strong the recommendation is. For example, a Do guideline is one that should always2 be followed. On the other hand, Consider guidelines should generally be followed, but if you fully understand the reasoning behind a guideline and have a good reason to not follow it anyway, you should not feel bad about breaking the rules. Similarly, Do not guidelines indicate something you should almost never do. Less strong, Avoid guidelines indicate that something is generally not a good idea, but there are known cases where breaking the rule makes sense.

Some more complex guidelines are followed with additional background information, illustrative code samples, and rationale.

Language Choice and Code Examples

One of the goals of the Common Language Runtime is to support a variety of programming languages: those with implementations provided by Microsoft, such as C++, VB, C#, F#, Python, and Ruby, as well as third-party languages such as Eiffel, COBOL, Fortran, and others. Therefore, this book was written to be applicable to a broad set of languages that can be used to develop and consume modern frameworks.

To reinforce the message of multilanguage framework design, we considered writing code examples using several different programming languages. However, we decided against this. We felt that using different languages would help to carry the philosophical message, but it could force readers to learn several new languages, which is not the objective of this book.

We decided to choose a single language that is most likely to be readable to the broadest range of developers. We picked C#, because it is a simple language from the C family of languages (C, C++, Java, and C#), a family with a rich history in framework development.

Choice of language is close to the hearts of many developers, and we offer apologies to those who are uncomfortable with our choice.

About This Book

This book offers guidelines for framework design from the top down.

Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the book, describing the general philosophy of framework design. This is the only chapter without guidelines.

Chapter 2, “Framework Design Fundamentals,” offers principles and guidelines that are fundamental to overall framework design.

Chapter 3, “Naming Guidelines,” contains naming guidelines for various parts of a framework, such as namespaces, types, members, and common design idioms.

Chapter 4, “Type Design Guidelines,” provides guidelines for the general design of types.

Chapter 5, “Member Design,” takes it a step further and presents guidelines for the design of members of types.

Chapter 6, “Designing for Extensibility,” presents issues and guidelines that are important to ensure appropriate extensibility in your framework.

Chapter 7, “Exceptions,” presents guidelines for working with exceptions, the preferred error reporting mechanisms.

Chapter 8, “Usage Guidelines,” contains guidelines for extending and using types that commonly appear in frameworks.

Chapter 9, “Common Design Patterns,” offers guidelines and examples of common framework design patterns.

Appendix A contains a short description of coding conventions used in this book.

Appendix B describes a tool called FxCop. The tool can be used to analyze framework binaries for compliance with the guidelines described in this book. A link to the tool is included on the DVD that accompanies this book.

Appendix C is an example of an API specification that framework designers within Microsoft create when designing APIs.

Included with the book is a DVD that contains several hours of video presentations covering topics presented in this book by the authors, a sample API specification, and other useful resources.

2. Always might be a bit too strong a word. There are guidelines that should literally be always followed, but they are extremely rare. On the other hand, you probably need to have a really unusual case for breaking a “Do” guideline and still have it be beneficial to the users of the framework.

A must-have personal favorite

If you haven't bought this book yet, you really should. The first edition has been an invaluable asset to me on a number of past projects, and the second edition is even better with sections on newer language and framework features such as Linq and extension methods.

I've seen, read, and even written a few standards documents in my time as a professional programmer, and I think this book is the last one I'll be needing. The format of the book is one I always enjoyed, with the guidance interspersed with comments from the "peanut gallery" of Microsoft architects. These asides give you a lot of insight into the "why"s, something which a lot of standards documents are missing (I'm talking about YOU, IDesign). It's one thing to be told to do something in a particular way, but it's a lot better when you are told why. Simple coding patterns that I wouldn't have given a second thought to have turned out to have a great impact on other aspects of my code once they were explained.

The basics are covered, such as naming and formatting standards, but the book goes much further with sections about when and how to use certain interfaces, and provides some brief explanations of common design patterns as they relate to the .net framework. I'm not talking about "Visitor" or "Model View Presenter" here, I'm talking about "IDisposable"... muuuch lower level stuff.

Basically, this book isn't just about what you ought to be doing, it's about explaining why Microsoft did what they did in the .net framework. It's refreshing at times in the book to find a discussion about how something was a bad choice in retrospect, or how the framework designers wished they had done something differently knowing then what they know now. I feel a lot better about my own changes of mind, and less like an amateur for not having seen the eventual solution in the beginning. After reading it, I'm more comfortable that I've made the right career decision to stick with this programming stuff.

Another great asset included with this book is the DVD. It's full of training sessions and example API specifications. One of the first things I did with the previous edition was to convert all the videos to play on my Zune, and spent the next few weeks watching through them whenever I got the chance. I probably won't watch them all over again, since I think they're the same videos, but they're definitely worth the watching.

If you're going to write maintainable .NET code, get this book

One of my all-time favorite programming books. Puts into very clear language practices that would have probably taken me a couple more years to come up to on my own.

It fully describes how and why the .NET framework is laid out the way it is, why the parts that seem to annoy you the most got it wrong and how, and provides many useful guidelines from helping you refrain from shooting yourself in the foot.

I might also say that it's equally applicable to just about any modern, sort of OO-based procedural language, but that would probably result in bloody religious wars.

Also if you're thinking on developing a framework on any Object Oriented language, this is your book, it covers all the guidelines that makes a framework usable and powerful.
