Much Ado about Nothing

Much less than I expected. Many blank pages and repetition to make it "book" size. Nothing close to what a Cliff's Notes version would be. This should have cost 99 cents. I heard the actual book was excellent, I guess that I deserve what I got for trying to cut corners.

The illustrations nicely capture the core message

This is a compact yet essential book behind which lies decades of empirical research. The illustrations nicely capture the core message, and the structure chosen is interesting in itself ("experts reflect, experts borrow", etc).

Reading this won't make you design software like an expert, but it should help to keep important principles in mind. My only wish, and this is the researcher in me speaking, is that there was a way to link the guidance to the specific examples and research establishing that guidance.

Succinct, short, and valuable for the seasoned designer

This is a short book, little (6"x6") book that nicely captures the 66 ideas succinctly. These ideas are distilled from years of research done by hundreds of people. However, don't let the book's deceptive simplicity fool you into thinking that it is for novices. If you're not already fairly experienced with software design, you're unlikely to get much out of it. That is simply not the target audience, in my opinion. But then please also remember that it is an MIT Press book...not exactly a lightweight grade book publisher.

If you are semi-expert or atleast fairly seasoned in software design, this book is a gem. Think of it as a constant reminder to deliberately prod you about some of the better practices. (The book has a companion site, but I found nothing more than a preview of the book's content there.) I view this book as surely worth the thirteen bucks I paid for it.

The book's broader appeal is that anyone who does white-collar thinking-driven, design-oriented work other than software design will also find the takeaways from the book meaningful, relevant, and digestible. Overall, I would recommend this book if you're in the seasoned/ experienced category. If you're a rookie 2-3 years out of school, please come back in ten years time...it will mean more then.

bought two of these for my coworkers, filled with solid truths about code / engineering design

This fantastic book contains numerous aphorisms and axioms for people who actually design code (not just write code).
Some may say that the book is too short but that's because each page has few words but contains wisdom that goes far beyond the words.
I've seen these principles often ignored on real projects and it's always to the detriment of the project.
If you read the book and it seems too simple, maybe take a moment and evaluate what you do know and how you might summarize what you know. Those who've been through the Software Dev Life Cycle at numerous companies have seen each of these axioms play out in the positive and the negative along the way.
Great book. Interesting and thought provoking.

This book came into existence because there did not seem to be any single book that would be adequate as a text for courses on hearing aids or that could advise practicing clinicians on all aspects of hearing aids.

I have aimed to make the book both practically useful and theoretically sound. Issues are explained rather then described. Wherever possible, practical recommendations are based on empirical research, and where there is no research to draw upon, the tentative nature of the recommendation or conclusion is indicated. Readers who already know the field well will notice that the book contains some data and clinical procedures that are published for the first time, as well as hopefully some new insights and perspectives into older issues.

The book is designed to be read on a number of levels. For readers who need only an overview of a topic, the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter should suffice. Most readers will hopefully be enticed to read further; the essential information on each topic is marked with a shaded bar in the margin. These marked paragraphs are designed to be read, and to be understandable, without the intervening paragraphs. I think of the marked material as a thin book buried inside this thick book. Some academic courses may wish to restrict themselves to just this material, which includes approximately half the book. The remaining material provides a greater level of detail. Finally, the most detailed comments are tucked away as footnotes and as sections in small print. The material at all levels is further segmented by presenting the most theoretical material and the most practical material in the form of self-contained panels. These two types of panels are differentiated by their appearance and by the panel titles.

Best investment I ever made

Anyone in the field of Audiology knows this book as The Bible. I bought it four years ago and I use it as a reference book constantly. Do yourself a favor and bind this book because it will get worn! It is a comprehensive guide to hearing aids and it explains most terms in a simple and understandable manner. Some concepts will not seem simple right away, but read explanations from anyone else, and you will realize that Dillon is a master at explaining very complex concepts. I have taken two hearing aid courses based solely on this book and I strongly recommend it to anyone in our field.

great book covering many aspects of hearing aids

I'm just an interested amateur, but this books covers lots of areas in some depth regarding the technology and fitting of hearing aids. It would be nice to see a little more mathematical/engineering approach, but this book seems to be aimed at audiologists, and is well suited for that use.

Helped me with Board Certification Test

This book isn't up to date per se (OTC's in particular), however, the basic information it contains is fantastic. I give credit to this textbook for helping me to pass the national exam for NBC-HIS, without which I feel I may have very likely failed. The book is thorough in its approach to hearing aids and contains a great amount of information that all hearing professionals need to know. I keep my copy in my library as a ready reference. The only reason that I do not give it five stars is that it is 10 years old. Apart from this, it is an excellant book to study and keep as a useful reference. I highly recommend it.

Living Up the Street

Living Up the Street is one of the many books published by Gary Soto. Many of the books that he writes are about some childhood past experiences. It tells about his ups and downs that he went through as a child. Not all of the situations are from his childhood, but many are. Knowing the beginning of the book, a few events, and what I thought of the book will give you a better understanding of the book and how interesting it is. The book begins by introducing three children that will be the main characters throughout the book. These children are Rick 6, Chango 5, who is also the narrator in the book, and Debra 4. Basically the beginning the book tells about how the family struggles in life and how their mom, when angry, takes a belt to the children when they did inappropriate things. The first event that takes place is when their mom has to leave to go somewhere and someone else was supposed to watch the three children. The children thinking they could manage on their own got to stay home by themselves. The children liked to play with fire so they did make a fire and ended up burning some items in the house and they also had a tomato fight which made the house a complete mess. When their mom came home she was very angered by what they did. Another event that took place at the beginning deals with their father. Their father was a good man and a hard working one too. Their father was going to start to do some work on the house so he and his family could have better living conditions. One day their father got a head injury at work and he had to be taken to the hospital. There he stayed and two days later he ended up dying from the head injury. The whole family was sad to see him die. One thing that he was doing before he died was putting up a fence at home. The family did was got together and put the fence up themselves. They knew the father would have loved this. Those are just a few events that happen in this book. I do not want to tell the rest because then you would not have to read the book to see what happens. Basically the idea of the book to me is that the family starts out struggling, going through hard times and later they get everything together and become a good family who is doing very well compared to what they had been doing before. This book should be read by many people that like to know about how families are, what they do in bad situations, and how they make it through the bad times. Now that you know the beginning of the book, a few events that took place, and what I thought of the book you might just want to go read the book. It is one that is definitely should be read. You will enjoy it. It is not a very difficult book to read. There are not very many pages

Living Up the Street is one of many autobiographies written by Gary Soto. It tells of the ups and downs throughout his childhood, adolescence, and even adult life. This realistic book is enjoyable to read because many people can relate to one of his experiences one way or another. Though the book it without plot, sequence, or continuity, it is interesting from the very first chapter you read. This autobiography is mainly about Gary Soto, and his poor Mexican family, growing up in Fresno, California, in the 60's and 70s'. It is fun to read because it is as if you are reading and viewing someone as they grow up and mature. Through Gary's mistakes, he's learns valuable lessons for life on his own. To give you a better understanding of the book, knowing some events that occurred in the beginning will help you know how interesting it is. In the introduction, the three main characters are presents, who also happen to be all siblings. Rick, who is 6, Gary 5, and Debra 4. Most of the beginning shows the everyday family struggles they had growing up and how when the Mom, when she was angry enough, hit them with a belt after they acted up. One of the first events which happened, is when the Mom had somewhere to go and left the children home alone unattended accidentally. Since the kids loved playing with fire, they managed to burn a few items on fire inside the house and have fun with a tomato fight also, ruining the entire living room and kitchen. This is just one of many events that took place in this novel.

Living up the Street is an autobiography by Gary Soto. Those who love autobiographies will love this novel. One of the reasons I liked this book is because Gary has some very interesting events that occur in his life. Sometimes those events can be quite hilarious, and other times he makes you wonder why he was doing the crazy things he did. Gary not only learns from his mistakes, he also applies what he learns to other problems he encounters throughout his life.

I generally like reading autobiographies because I get to see what another person's life was like and I get to see what problems they faced in life. Then I try to figure out how I can use their problem and solution to make my life better. Another thing I like about reading autobiographies is that it can be fun learning what happened on another person's life. For those of you who hate autobiographies, I think you will still like this novel because Gary's life is very interesting.

The difficulty level was not very high at all because he rarely used highly sophisticated words in his writing. He randomly used Spanish words throughout the book. That increased the length of the book for me because there were some words I did not know the meaning to. Overall, I would say that the novel is not very long and it is very intriguing.

Short story by Stephen Crane, published serially in Collier's Weekly (Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 1898), and then in the collection The Monster and Other Stories (1899). Combining symbolic imagery with naturalistic detail, it is an existential tale about human vanities and delusions. As the story opens, three visitors find shelter from a blizzard at Pat Scully's hotel in Fort Romper, Neb.: a nervous New Yorker known as the Swede, a rambunctious Westerner named Bill, and a reserved Easterner called Mr. Blanc. The Swede becomes increasingly drunk, defensive, and reckless. He beats Scully's son, Johnnie, in a fight after accusing him of cheating at cards. When the Swede accosts a patron of a bar, he is stabbed and killed. The story ends ambiguously at a point several months later, when timid Mr. Blanc confesses to Bill that he feels somewhat responsible for the Swede's death because he failed to act when he saw that Johnnie was indeed cheating at cards. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

The Way It Is

Crane, Stephen. The Blue Hotel

Stephen Crane’s long short story is a much anthologised item, it being typical of his masculine focussed social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest philosophy. Here, a character known simply as The Swede is the focus of the five major players in the story, set in an isolated settlement in The Blue Hotel in Fort Romper, Nebraska. Life is tough in winter in Romper and a man needs all his wits, and probably a handy weapon, simply to survive. The Swede is nervous to the point of hysteria. Pat Scully, the hotel keeper, his son Johnnie, the Easterner and the cowboy are shocked by the Swede’s insistent nervous laughter and his compulsive fear of being murdered. While Scully is out meeting any likely customers from the train, and over a card game, the Swede accuses Johnnie of cheating, which leads to a challenge and a fight outside in the blizzard.

‘Kill him, Johnnie! Kill him!, shouts the cowboy, as the contestants grapple, until finally Johnnie falls. But encouraged by his father he continues, until overpowered at last by the heavier man, and left to ‘the mixture of sympathy and abuse’ of the women. The Swede leaves in triumph for another bar, where he boasts about what he’d done to Scully’s son, but his unwilling audience shun him and his bravado, declining his offer of a drink together. This infuriates the drunken Swede, who threatens a gambler and in a struggle is pierced by a long knife. This ‘citadel of virtue, of virtue, wisdom, power, was pierced as easily as if it had been a melon,’ we are told, and its innocent murderer is, we learn in the final section given the lenient sentence of three years in jail.

There is no moral to the story. Given the setting and the characters it’s a sequence of likely events. Neither the demon drink nor the violence in nature is to blame. Anger, fear, jealousy and the need to impose on others are inescapable. That’s just the way it is.

Starting to go back and read some of the "masters" to increase my depth and knowledge of writing styles. Short story with an interesting plot line of paranoia and self fulling prophecy at the end. Highly recommend for a quick read on a flight on an hour or more.

PreS-Gr 2—Tim is on his way home from school one rainy, dark day when he meets Sam, a big blue whale who made a wrong turn and got stuck in his neighborhood. It's very dark, and the other kids in the neighborhood can't see Sam. Indeed, he is virtually hidden on the pages, deep sea green against a dark blue-black background. Sam is metaphorically a fish out of water, and so is Tim. Sometimes the boy feels like no one notices him. But seeing each other, "they both felt better knowing they weren't invisible," and they become friends. Tim brings Sam some water and promises to help him get back to the sea. It takes lots of planning, but Tim is determined to help because "friends don't let friends down." After reviewing the plans together, they decide to use Tim's bike to tug Sam back to the ocean. It was hard work, but Tim "should not…could not…would not let his friend down." Ultimately, Tim is successful, splashing and crashing deep into the ocean. Sam is nowhere to be seen, but only for a moment. He returns to Tim, now safe on a buoy, and delivers a friendly kiss because "friends don't let friends down." In the last scene, there is a pictorial hint that Tim will be making a new (human) friend as he comes ashore. In addition, the mood of the illustrations changes from dark and moody to sunshine bright. The cartoonlike pictures are rendered in acrylics with digital enhancement, primarily in dark greens and oranges until the final panels. Tim finds a whale beached on a street adjacent to his school and vows to help his new friend get back to the sea. The amorphous, sluglike whale, Sam, is simply stuck and as shockingly invisible to others as Tim is. The whale's hugeness captures the heft and burden of Tim's own inexplicable loneliness. Readers first see Tim standing alone in pouring rain, his face obscured by a dripping hoodie and his need for a friend plain. Sam's massive body, a murky emerald green, often entirely fills the page, making him difficult to discern. His round eyes, however, deliver remarkably acute information about his worry and salty homesickness. Tim's earnest promise to get Sam back to the ocean brightens this book of dark double-page spreads, done in deep blues and greens from the very bottom of the sea. Beaming tangerines highlight all the words and people in this friendship tale, buoying every inky illustration. Children will cheer as Tim ties Sam to a rope behind his bike and pulls and pedals and huffs and puffs him all the way to a seaside cliff...and over! Delightful look at friendship and loyalty.

I love books that help emphasize the importance of friendship at an early age, so it's probably unsurprising that I absolutely fell head over heels for the utterly delightful To the Sea.

Debut author Cale Atkinson introduces us to Tim, a young boy who happens to meet Sam, a whale who has lost his way. As Tim and Sam figure out how to get Sam back to the sea, Atkinson shows how friendships are formed, and how their trust in each other that helps them do extraordinary things.

Atkinson tells a lovely story in very few words, using short, cheerful sentences to emphasize Tim's initial loneliness, and his utter joy in meeting Sam, a kindered spirit. Their mutual realization that they truly see each other is heartwarming, and a great reminder on how having a friend who truly understands you, can inspire great ideas and even greater adventures.

Atkinson's storytelling is beautifully accentuated by his bold and detailed illustrations. The bright tangerine tones help dually emphasize Tim's optimistic personality, and also help brings warmth to Tim and Sam's friendship. Atkinson also makes great use of double-page spreads, helping to emphasize Sam's size, and the magnificient scope of Tim and Sam's time together.

Of special note: As author Caryn Caldwell points out in her review, younger readers may be alarmed by an almost-drowning scene in the final pages of the book. Adults should be aware, and also feel ready to talk about the scene.

Sweet and charming.

To the Sea is a sweet, sweet story that will melt the heart. The illustrations are charming and innovative, lending even more power to a tale that delivers an important message on the nature of true friendship and the perils of being invisible. This enchanting picture book utilizes a firm sense of whimsy to explore a real world problem When young Tim meets Sam, they quickly discover that they sure the common feeling that they are invisible, which is pretty funny since Sam is a big blue whale. Tim and Sam form an unlikely friendship, which causes them both to realize that they are no longer invisible. Tim's efforts to return Sam to the sea brings out the book's major theme: "friends don't let friends down." Friends are never invisible to each other.

The innovative illustrations are captivating, with a unique color palette that evokes the deep blues and greens of the sea. The offsetting orange text, and orange depictions of the "real world" are startling and effective. Sam's bright orange coat is anything but invisible in the wide expanse of the blue-green sea. My only concern about this beautiful package is that some of the spreads are very dark,and it's sometimes difficult to discern Sam. It's a wonderful idea to make the big blue whale the most difficult to see, but I worry that in group sharing, kids won't be able to discern his giant sized charm. Still, I think it's always easy to see the power of friendship, and that's the most affecting part of this journey To the Sea.

A nice message about appreciating one's friends

Tim feels invisible until he finds a whale washed up on shore. When he and the whale are the only ones to notice each other, they form a friendship. But Tim knows that whales belong in the ocean, and he's determined to save his friend -- even if the dangerous plan he comes up with puts Tim himself at risk.

This is a lovely story with strong, bold illustrations, a hopeful ending, and a nice message about appreciating one's friends. Some children may find the scene where Tim nearly drowns a little distressing, so adult guidance might be helpful.
