Helps you understand...

I came across this book recently when I was researching pricing mechanisms in deregulated electricity markets. Most of the books on optimization and numerical methods that I have studied focused on constructing algorithms for arbitrarily defined problems. Most of the time, the logic and the rationale are buried beneath the intimidating mathematical equations. This is one of such books where the authors do not shy from using elementary examples and simple English language to clarify fundamental concepts. Nowhere did I come across such easy-to-follow explanations supported by case-studies and examples as it was done in this book.

It would not take a genius to realize that in the real world constrained by time and computational power the perfect method is most often beyond the reach. Our world revolves around the so called "second best solutions". The "art" in optimization are formulation and approximation. For those of you, who intend to formulate, construct and solve optimization problems presented by the world around you (not just understand the theory), this book is a great asset. I know I benefited from it greatly.

"Optimization" and "Art of Optimization"

The book covers the most important topics in applied optimization. The main focus of this book is how to formulate and transform optimization problems so that they can be solved by well-developed software. This aim has been achieved magnificently and skillfully.

The most important problem in applied optimization, I believe, is problem formulation, that is to translate the intuitive ideas into rigorous mathematics. The book has done an excellent job in explaining the process of formulating an optimization problem. It provides step-by-step descriptions that are very helpful and useful. A lot of good examples and exercises are illustrated, which can be used as templates to formulate many real engineering problems with minor revisions.

The second major issue in applied optimization is to reformulate an original optimization problem to its standard form, so that it can be directly solved by known software. This part is tough because it involves a lot of mathematics. But the author succeeds to solve it in a magic way. Many abstract and complicated definitions and algorithms are visualized by beautiful and meaningful figures. The author also tries to avoid the unnecessary mathematics. Many theorems and proofs are deliberately rewritten to ease the understanding of this part.

Applied optimization has two sides: science and art. Most of the books in this field focus on the science side, but not so satisfactory in the art side. The book has done a very good job in balancing both sides. You can expect to obtain both "optimization" and "the art of optimization" from this book.

Does exactly what the title says

About me: I am a grad student (economics) and I model optimization problems regularly. This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about Optimization and it's applications or for someone who is familiar with the theory of optimization, but wants to know more about particular algorithms. The theory is nicely built and problem formulation is excellent. The text itself is widely spaced and crisp to look at. Another advantage of this book is the extra material you can download from the author's website. It helps us to actually understand how to convert these formulations into code that can be solved by popular optimization software. All in all a 5/5

Further research convinced Louis that he has amassed the tools and detailed information to compile this comprehensive history. MOST EASY METHOD

Having been an Industrial Engineer and Management Consultant for many years I am allways sceptical when a "new" tecnique is launched. It was in this frame of mind that I approached MOST. What a revelation, not new as such as it is based on the original tried and trusted MTM system, however it is a fresh approach, and a welcome one at that! Here is a system which is statisticaly accurate, quick to apply,and easy to understand. More importantly it encourages method development and improvement. As a recommendation I would encourage everyone in this field of operation to read this book and consider its application. I did and have just completed the approved training and certification course.

Great Addition to Any Fake Book Collection

I love this book. There are a lot of good tunes with great jazz melodies.

The book is thinner than Volume 1, but it also has some more modern tunes in it, like Havona by Weather Report, Farmer's Trust by Pat Metheny, Locomotion, Just the Way You Are (Billy Joel), Morning Dance (Spyro Gyra), Phase Dance (Metheny), Prisoner of Love, and Song for Bilbao (Metheny). I was thrilled to find a tune that the Manhattan Transfer recorded on their Mecca for Moderns CD called Until I Met You. I remember hunting for it years ago and couldn't find it.

I also compared the songs in the Real Book Volume 2 to "The New York Ninety", a list of tunes compiled by a gigging New York jazz musician. The New York Ninety represents the 90 tunes you need to know if you want to be ready for just about anything at a jazz gig in New York.

Most of the songs on the New York Ninety are from the Real Book, Volume 1, and the Chuck Sher The New Real Book series. However, the Real Book Volume 2 has three songs from the New York Ninety in it.

But in its defense, The Real Book Volume 2 also has a lot of songs I've seen in the Jamey Aebersold jazz instruction books. It also has a lot of songs I've heard played live a lot, such as Doxy, Mr. Magic, Morning Dance, Route 66, This Masquerade, Until I Met You, Yardbird Suite, Affirmation and Comin' Home Baby.

I also found that by simply reading through some of the tunes I don't know, I found some really interesting songs that I could see myself recommending to my band eventually.

So, there's enough here to justify the price of this book. I recommend it very highly to anyone who wants to play standards, sight-read some interesting tunes, and get a small but significant smattering of more contemporary music.

A must for bass players

Beyond useful! It's great to have so many more songs, further to the excellent Volume 1. Even for non-jazzers, these volumes are more than worth their cost just for the bass-clef sight-reading practice that they provide.

Kindle Version is GREAT for Practice and Backup but lousy for Performance

GREAT tool for learning new songs, but keep in mind that you don't want to use the Kindle version of these books for performance. Reason? Kindle doesn't play with Blue Tooth Switches. This is a major issue for us Bass players. Missing a bar equals trolling for a poke in the nose. You don't have time for the finger swipe thing. Take up the Sax.

You'll have to copy the pieces you need for performance over to Mobile Sheets for Android and get a Gigeasy. Its a Colorado thing, you wouldn't understand.....

Provides a remarkable overview of all important trumpet topics and includes complete analysis of important works. Some reporting is done with considerable bias (the authors are trumpeters) including a suspect appendix of important 20th century works that includes far more than a fair share of the author's own commissions.

Read this book if you have daughters!

As a mom of preteen daughters, I found this book to be insightful, informative and also practical. I wish I had this book when my daughters were younger! I especially loved all the practical information offered in Chapter 5- How to manage environmental risks and Chapter 8- Don't have the "talk", start the conversation. If you have daughters, this is a "must have" book to add to your parenting library.

Good read IF your daughter hasn't already gone through puberty

I would recommend this book if you have a young daughter who has not yet entered puberty, as it offers concrete advice for ways you MAY avoid early puberty. However, if your daughter has already gone through early puberty, I would recommend against reading it. The double edged sword of offering advice to avoid early puberty is the implication you as a parent must have done something wrong if your daughter goes through puberty early, along with the associated guilt.

Gisele Great, This Book, Disappointing.

I was stunned that I didn't really care for this coffee table book of photographs. I can't recall when I was disappointed by one of the TASCHEN collection of photographs. They are always top-of-the-line quality products.

In this case I don't blame my disappointment on Gisele because she is truly a beautiful woman and according to the limited amount of text included in the book she is always willing to work hard and go the extra mile to help make the photographer's vision come to life. That being the case I have to blame the photographers, art directors or both for my personal disappointment with the book. The problem with fashion photography is that it is designed to make the product being sold look good. That's pretty much what's wrong with this book. The products look great and oh yes, the model is nice too even with her freckles.

Some great photographers are able to make photographs that go beyond the simple fashion portraits and become a higher form of photography. There are only a few photographs like that in this 10 pound fine art book.

The neon orange pages and other crazy color combinations included within the volume are also distracting.

Frankly, many of the family snapshots Gisele and her husband Tom Brady release to the public are more interesting than most of the photos included in this volume. I still can't believe I didn't love the book.

Simply Phenomenal in Every Possible Way!!

I was extremely bummed out when this book was first produced as this book was originally produced as a limited edition and they were very expensive with prices on the secondary market reaching as high as $1500-$2000 almost overnight. My hats off to Gisele as all of the money from that limited edition went to charity! I have been a HUGE fan of Gisele from the very beginning of her career and I am an avid collector of fashion photography books so I was just really disappointed that I couldn't afford to buy one of those books. So when I found out that a regular edition was going to be produced, I was ecstatic. I'm a professional photographer and while I don't personally shoot fashion, its always been one of my favorite genre's of photography. In my opinion, Gisele has been in some of the best fashion editorial's ever shot on film and she has had one of the best modeling career's in history.

When I finally received the package for the book, I was actually taken back a bit by the overall weight. I knew it was going to be a big book when I ordered it, but I wasn't expecting it to be that heavy. This book is an absolute monster. Its roughy 14 inches high x 10 inches wide, has 536 pages, and weighs in at roughly 10 pounds. And boy is it a beauty. Due to the overall size and color of the cover, which I absolutely love, this book sticks out no matter where you put it. For those unfamiliar with Taschen America Llc., they make some of the nicest art books I have ever seen and they certainly didn't disappoint this time around. In fact, this is one of the nicest books I have seen from them to date. Its got an absolutely striking and beautiful cover, a nice quality binding, and beautiful pages. This is an absolutely perfect coffee table style book. I guarantee if you put this book on your coffee table, it will literally be one of the very first things people notice when the enter the room. The color is like a magnet and just draws your attention to it.

As for the interior of the book, it is literally just one beautiful page after another. I had actually forgotten just how many fashion editorials Gisele had been in over her career. Its not just impressive, its downright mind blowing. Everyone who was anyone in fashion photography wanted to shoot Gisele and for good reason. There have been very few models over the years that could match her beauty and skills in front of the camera. She is an incredibly dynamic fashion model and anytime you pair her up with a great fashion photographer...well, the results are always spectacular. Its like a chemist mixing sodium and water. You know each and every time you do it the results are going to be spectacular. You get those same results when you put Gisele in front of a camera.

Bottom line - there are a LOT of fashion photography books on the market with more and more being released all the time. Some deal with general fashion, some deal with specific photographers, and some deal with specific models. I literally have a book shelf full of fashion photography books and generally speaking, most of them are very nice books. That being said, this book is just in a completely different league than most of the other fashion books that hit the market. Books like this simply don't come around very often. Out of the 150+ fashion photography books that I own there are roughly 6-7 that I would deem absolutely irreplaceable. Gisele Bundchen is without question one of those books. Honestly, I feel guilty even calling this a book as its so head and shoulders above most of the other books on the market that it feels like your doing it a disservice simply calling it a book. A massive tome is a much better representation of what your getting and make no mistake about it, it is massive. And one of the most impressive things about it is that even at 536 pages, there feels like there is absolutely no filler in this book at all. Every single picture in this book deserves to be in this book. Its just beautiful Gisele pictures from front cover to back cover. Taschen proves yet again that they are one of the best art book publishers in the world. If your a fan of Gisele or even just a fan of fashion photography in general, this book should be the very next book you purchase. In fact, what are you waiting for? Just put the book in your cart and checkout already!. I guarantee with 100% certainty that you won't be disappointed. Art books simply don't get any better than this. As the title of my review states, its simply phenomenal in every possible way!!
