About the Author
Kristi Kanel (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is a Full Professor at California State University, Fullerton in the Department of Human Services where she has been teaching for over 31 years. She is the author of A GUIDE TO CRISIS INTERVENTION, 5th Edition; HUMAN SERVICE DELIVERY TO LATINOS, 2nd Edition; and AN OVERVIEW OF THE HUMAN SERVICES, 2nd Edition (with Melanie Horn-Mallers). Dr. Kanel was a practicing psychotherapist for over 25 years. Her experience as a counselor includes working at two non-profit agencies (the Anaheim Free Clinic and a battered woman's shelter), a public agency, a managed care organization, and in private practice where she worked with a multitude of client populations, specializing in trauma. Her most recent research has focused on the mental health needs and interventions for the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Other research includes mental health needs of Latinos and crisis intervention practices.

Excellent, comprehensive book on Crisis Intervention!

I have been in the field for twenty years. Asked to teach a course to students at a nearby university, I ordered this book!
I find that it is very readable and interesting and very much like the work I have been doing for the last two decades! Students will learn first hand information of what makes up crisis work, and become familiar with the many facets of crisis work. Down to earth writing and very real case scenarios! Excellent resource!

way too many errors

The content of this textbook is solid and easy to understand. It's a good intro to crisis intervention.
However, it seems like virtually every page has at least one typo or error. This is so distracting and unprofessional - if a publisher is going to charge this much, the book ought to be pretty flawless in my opinion. On page 103 for example, there are three mistakes.
1. "Family counseling is an effective style for Latinso..." (should be "Latinos")
2. "...and act out through joing gangs..." (should be "joining")
3. "This expression of affect(emotion)may allow them..." (no space on either side of the parenthesis)
I can and do ignore the occasional typo in textbooks all the time, but this book goes well beyond the occasional and has become extremely annoying. I'm finding it difficult now to concentrate on the information because I'm constantly waiting for the next typo. Whoever edited this should be fired. Grrrrrrr.

Easy, informative read

This book is well organized and easy to read. I am the director of a domestic/sexual violence crisis center, and we are using pieces of this book as the foundation for staff/volunteer foundational training. Some of the information like the cycle of domestic violence relationships is a little outdated, but the book is still good. (And we still teach the cycle as an option of what an abusive relationship MAY look like, just not as the Golden standard of all abusive relationships).
